Her Future. 🌸Her Voice. 🌸Her Choice.

What happens to a girl’s dream when child marriage comes before she has had the chance to pursue it?

A future teacher may leave school.
A future leader may lose the space to discover her voice.
A girl who simply wants to learn, grow and choose her own path may suddenly have those choices made for her.

That is why, as we build towards the , Youth Fraternity for Change is putting girls at the centre of the conversation not simply as beneficiaries, but as voices, leaders, storytellers and advocates for change.

Through “Her Future. Her Voice. Her Choice.”, we are having conversations about girls’ dreams, education, leadership and the barriers that continue to stand in their way, particularly child marriage and teenage pregnancy.

And this conversation needs all of us girls and boys, parents, communities, leaders and allies.

Because a girl deserves more than people deciding what her future should look like.

Yes! She deserves the opportunity to shape it herself.

SEPTEMBER IS SU***DE PREVENTION MONTH

For some girls and young women, the pain is hidden behind silence.

Globally, more than 720,000 people die by su***de every year. Su***de is the third leading cause of death among young people aged 15–29—and the second among females in this age group.

In Uganda, WHO estimated that 525 women and girls died by su***de in 2021. Behind these numbers are lives, families and dreams that deserved support.

Su***de has no single cause. However, the risks can increase when a girl experiences:

• Child or forced marriage
• Physical, sexual or emotional violence
• Forced or unintended pregnancy
• Isolation from friends, family and school
• Financial dependence and loss of opportunities
• Shame, stigma and being blamed for abuse
• Depression, trauma and limited access to mental-health care

Child marriage can take away a girl’s education, freedom, safety and ability to make decisions about her own life. Violence can leave deep emotional wounds. When survivors are silenced, blamed or denied support, feelings of fear, loneliness and hopelessness may grow.

This is why ending child marriage and violence against women and girls is also part of protecting mental health and preventing su***de.

We must create communities where every girl is:

✅ Safe from violence
✅ Free to remain in school
✅ Able to choose if and when to marry
✅ Listened to without judgment
✅ Connected to appropriate health and psychosocial support

If someone tells you that they are thinking about su***de, take them seriously. Listen calmly, stay with them, remove immediate dangers where it is safe to do so, and help them reach a trusted adult, health worker or the nearest health facility.

Let us break the silence, challenge harmful practices and build a future where every girl knows:

Your pain matters.
Your voice matters.
Your life matters.

Today, officially launches our campaign towards the International Day of the Girl Child.

Every girl has dreams. Yet for many girls, those dreams are threatened by child marriage, teenage pregnancy, violence, harmful gender norms and barriers to education.

Over the coming weeks, we will amplify girls’ voices, share their stories and call on communities to create spaces where girls can learn, lead, dream and make choices about their future.

This is more than a campaign. It is a call to action.

Listen to her. Stand with her. Invest in her future.

💡 Monday Motivation | Invest in a Girl’s Education

When a girl gets an education, she gains more than knowledge. She gains confidence, choices, a voice and the power to shape her own future.

Every girl deserves the opportunity to learn, dream and become who she chooses to be.

This Monday, let us remember that educating girls is not just investing in one girl. It is investing in families, communities and generations to come.

Let us keep creating spaces where every girl can stay in school, thrive and lead.

Did you know?

The more time a girl spends in school, the greater the reduction in risk of child marriage. Access to education affects the timing of marriage more than marriage affects access to education.

Through our girl education support, 150+ girls have received school sponsorship support and this has helped to improve retention of girls in school and better performance in class.

For girls who face barriers to education, support at the right time can make all the difference. When a girl stays in school, she gains more than an education. she gains greater opportunities to shape her future.

At Youth Fraternity for Change, we are building girls futures one girl at a time and together we can continue creating pathways for girls to learn, grow and become important citizens in our communities.

8 years of working in RUBINDI -Mbarara district. 8 years of listening, learning and building change together with families and community leaders.

Over the years, one thing has become clear: sustainable change starts with communities themselves.
We have continuously engaged community leaders to create spaces for dialogue and this is what we have learned that:

✔ Community leaders are powerful champions for change when they are meaningfully involved.
✔ Listening to communities helps us understand the realities behind harmful practices.
✔ Girls’ voices must be at the centre of conversations that affect their lives.
✔ Ending child marriage and teenage pregnancy requires collective action from families and leaders to young people and institutions.

Our journey has helped strengthen local voices, challenge harmful practices and support communities to create safer, more supportive environments for over 1000 girls directly and indirectly.

Here is to 7 years of learning, partnership and community-led change and to many more years of working together to protect girls, advance their rights, eradicate child marriage and create opportunities for every girl to access and thrive in education.

Aine’s Story: Resilience in Rubindi

At just 14 years old, Priscilla has carried weights that would break most adults.

Growing up in Rubindi, her childhood was defined by a family battle with mental illness. Before her grandmother passed away, Priscilla was not just a child, she was a primary caregiver, managing an entire household while her older sister fled into an early marriage to escape the hardship at home.

Today, Priscilla lives with her aunty who supports the family by selling tomatoes. Life remains a challenge; Priscilla lives with an eye disability that makes schoolwork difficult but her spirit remains strong and optimistic about the bright future (she is fighting for) now that she has an opportunity to be in school.

“What makes me happy," Priscilla says, "is when I solve a problem, fix something or help others.”
Aine is no longer just a girl talking about her challenges. She is an emerging leader among her peers and community. She wants to “fix it”

Before YFC-GFF support, Priscilla’s days were clouded by self-pity, hunger and uncertainty. She often went to school without lunch or basic supplies like books, pens, school uniform, shoes and pads.
That has changed over time!
“I am grateful I know my school fees are paid. I have my books. I am always smart in my school uniform and shoes now. It makes me feel confident," she shares with a smile.

With her basic needs and scholastic materials met, Priscilla is dreaming bigger now. Through the 2025 YFC Sustainable Support, she received a piggery project. She has already successfully managed two planting seasons and sees herself as a future commercial farmer. She loves it

Her heart, however, remains with her family.

Her ultimate goal is to find and care for her lost mother, who has been absent for a long time and to build a home on their own land. Through her faith and her education, she is determined to become "an important being" in her family and community.
Priscilla’s dream of becoming a commercial farmer started with a single piggery project.

There are many more girls in Rubindi waiting for the same opportunity to trade hunger and scarcity for hope.

Aine has found her voice, what she wants now is to be heard by the world.
We have learnt that every little support for girls matters.

It goes beyond girls just receiving aid/education support. They become leaders who take charge of themselves and others.
When we give a girl the confidence to become an 'important being' in her own family, everything changes.
