Protocol: 's Protocol 💪

The Members reviewed the Draft African Charter on Family, Sovereignty and Values and expressed concern about its provisions that undermine and seek to roll back the gains made under the , particularly Article 14, which protects women’s and girls’ Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights .

The Coalition considers the Draft Charter to be regressive and repressive, as it threatens to undermine significant progress made in advancing , women’s rights, , and access to sexual and reproductive health services.

Following the review, Coalition members committed to take collective and strategic action to safeguard the gains achieved under the Maputo Protocol. The Coalition will also advocate for the Government of Uganda not to ratify the Draft African Charter and will engage relevant stakeholders to raise awareness about its potential implications for women’s and girls’ rights.

Today, (WWM) hosted an Exchange Learning Visit with the Uganda (CWJU) on Rapid Legal Response (RLR) as part of experience sharing and peer learning among LIRA partners.

The exchange provided an opportunity for both organisations to share practical experiences, successes, challenges, and lessons learned in providing timely legal support to health workers, women and girls facing Reproductive rights violations.

The session strengthened partners’ understanding of effective RLR approaches, including case identification and documentation, referrals, legal representation, and engagement with justice and law enforcement actors.

The exchange contributed to strengthening the capacity of LIRA partners to respond to urgent Reproductive rights violations and improve access to justice for women and girls. It also enhanced peer-to-peer learning, collaboration, and knowledge sharing, enabling partners to identify effective practices that can be adapted within their respective contexts.

The engagement reinforced the importance of timely legal intervention, community-based legal empowerment, and coordinated response mechanisms in promoting accountability and enhancing access to justice for women and girls.

recently conducted a radio talk show under the theme “Breaking the Silence: Adolescent Girls and Young Women’s Access to Services".

The radio talk show provided an important platform to clarify the importance of PAC as essential, lifesaving healthcare and to address some of the myths, stigma and misinformation surrounding these services. The discussion brought together key stakeholders, including the District Health Officer, a midwife from Busia Health Centre IV, a peer who supports the referral and linkage of AGYW to PAC services, and an AGYW who shared her lived experience and that of her peers regarding complications resulting from unsafe abortion.

The participation of these different voices helped to provide both technical and lived-experience perspectives on the barriers AGYW face in accessing timely and appropriate PAC services, particularly in rural communities.

, with support from , conducted an awareness session with Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW) focusing on the prevention of unsafe abortion and the promotion of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights ).

The session created a for AGYW to discuss the realities surrounding , , and their impact on the health and well-being of women and girls.

Participants shared lived experiences from their communities, noting that many AGYW resort to unsafe methods to terminate unintended pregnancies due to limited access to accurate information, stigma, and barriers to quality reproductive health services. Some participants also recounted incidents where peers had experienced severe complications or lost their lives as a result of unsafe abortion.

The discussions further emphasized the importance of Comprehensive Sexuality Education , informed decision-making, safer sexual practices, and access to youth-friendly SRHR information and services. The session strengthened participants' knowledge on the risks associated with unsafe abortion while encouraging them to make informed choices and seek appropriate reproductive health services when needed.
