Our Story
WHERE WE STARTED: In January 2016, our founder Ken Ochieng was called back to his home of Mayrinya in Uganda’s Mayuge District to help nurse his sick grandmother in her final days. Before sickness eventually took her life, she made sure her legacy would extend beyond her 88 years of life. She entrusted the five acres of land that had been in the family for 200 years to Ken on the promise that it be used to serve not just the family but the entire community. With that promise, OMUTUKUVU began to take shape.
“I was away traveling for many years until I came back to Uganda to see my grandmother in the village. Then everything changed, she was sick and I had to be around though she suddenly couldn't make it, we were left the responsibility of the land and this project was started out of her place in memory of her and her heart towards her long time neighbors and families” - A statement from Ken the organization Co-founder & President.
With the help of volunteers from all over the world, OMUTUKUVU’s vision was built based on the most urgent needs of Mayrinya and paired with the most sustainable solutions to meet these needs. The purpose of OMUTUKUVU Project is establish of self-sustainable development in agriculture, education, energy and water to build improved, sustainable socio-economic conditions for the thousands of people in the community. The core work of OMUTUKUVU Project will cover the following areas: 1. Implementing of agricultural training programs for advanced agriculture techniques. (Crop diversity, storage and agricultural crisis management) 2. Creating a government-certified, local primary education school (Grades 1-7) to provide foundational education to a community where 80% of children under the age of 12 cannot read or write.
3. Build and equip our adult-level vocational school with recycled computers and industrial tools to begin to teach functional skills to increase employment opportunities beyond agriculture.
