BCFS is a well-established, and internationally renowned research center combining topics as diverse as chimpanzee cognition, the origins of language, rainforest fragmentation, and amphibian diversity. Set up in a clearing approximately 3km inside the forest on the site of the old Sonso sawmill are sleeping quarters, a kitchen, office, and even a library and laboratory. As well as research, BCFS h
as an education team that works in local villages and schools explaining the importance of conserving the forest as a resource for the future. One of the key conservation programs employs ex-hunters as snare-removers. The team works to clear the forest of the illegal traps that can kill or maim the chimpanzees and, in return, as well as providing a stable income, BCFS supports a pig breeding program so that an alternative source of meat is available to the local communities. We are also now the Ugandan national center for chimpanzee health monitoring, with an active training program for Ugandan wildlife conservation workers and veterinarians. None of what we do would be possible without the support and funding of the lovely people at the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland: http://www.facebook.com/edinburgh.zoo
Our conservation snare team and education team are funded by the equally wonderful folks at Oakland Zoo: http://www.facebook.com/OakZoo
