My name is Paul Wasswa from Manywa village in Uganda I have always been a strong man. A fighter. A provider.
But right now, I am broken.
I am writing this with tears in my eyes and a knot in my stomach. I manage a school filled with the laughter of over 80 little ones—babies, really. Just 3 to 7 years old. They come to us with hungry bellies and bright eyes, trusting us to keep them safe.
But I am failing them.
A few weeks ago, I was standing on the side of the road when an over-speeding truck lost control and smashed into me. I remember the sound of metal, the feeling of flying through the air, and then... nothing.
I woke up five days later in a hospital bed, with a tube down my throat and a machine breathing for me. I spent 5 days on oxygen. Five days fighting for a life I wasn’t sure I wanted to fight for anymore. I saw the face of death, and it was cold.
I survived. I am here. But my heart is breaking all over again.
Our school van—the only lifeline for these children—has died. It is broken down. Useless. And right now, we are using ONE motorcycle to transport over 80 toddlers from travel 5 kilometres to and from school.
Can you picture that? A 3-year-old holding onto a motorcycle in the middle of traffic? I watch them every morning, and my blood runs cold. I know the weight of a truck hitting a human body. I know the sound of bones breaking. I know the terror of lying on the asphalt wondering if you will ever see your family again.
If that truck hits one of these babies while they are on that motorcycle... I will not survive that pain. My heart will stop for good this time.
I have been quoted $1,600 to fix the van.
So far $ 1013 has been raised It is a fortune to me, but it is cheaper than a new one. It is the only barrier between these children and a tragedy I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.
I am asking you, from the deepest, most desperate part of my soul, to please help me. Donate whatever you can. Even a few dollars. I am not begging for myself—I am begging for the little girl who holds my hand every morning, and the little boy who calls me "Uncle Paul”.
I survived the truck. Please help me save these children from the same fate. By helping me raise $587 which is remaining.
