Empower Women: Climate Action Starts with Her
and the Climate Crisis
Women in Uganda, especially in rural areas, are at the frontline of the climate crisis. As primary caregivers and providers for their families, they are often responsible for fetching water, gathering firewood, and growing food. Yet, climate change exacerbates these responsibilities. Droughts, deforestation, and water scarcity mean women must walk longer distances for basic resources, leaving them with little time to pursue education or economic activities.
Despite these challenges, women hold immense potential as climate champions. By empowering them with resources, skills, and opportunities, we can turn them into powerful agents of climate action and community transformation.
Role of Women in Climate Action
Women’s roles in their households and communities position them uniquely to contribute to sustainable development and environmental conservation. Here’s how empowering women drives climate action:
1. Promoting Sustainable Practices: Women are often custodians of natural resources. By equipping them with knowledge about regenerative farming, water conservation, and clean energy, they can lead their communities toward sustainability.
2. Building Resilience: Women who are economically empowered can better support their families during climate shocks such as droughts or floods.
3. Advocating for Change: Empowered women are more likely to participate in decision-making processes at local and national levels, advocating for policies that address climate challenges.
ACCEC’s Initiatives: Empowering Women for Climate Resilience. At ACCEC, we believe that empowering women is key to effective climate action. Through our programs, we provide women with tools, skills, and opportunities to transform their communities while protecting the environment.
1. Training in Eco-Friendly Livelihoods:
ACCEC trains women in making briquettes from agricultural waste as an alternative to firewood, reducing deforestation and indoor air pollution.
Participants learn backyard gardening techniques to grow food in small spaces, improving nutrition and food security for their families.
2. Access to Clean Energy Solutions:
We distribute solar lanterns and solar home systems to reduce dependency on kerosene, cutting household energy costs and emissions.
3. Entrepreneurship and Financial Literacy:
Women are trained in financial literacy, helping them start and manage small businesses like selling briquettes, organic produce & cracraft
4. Community Leadership Development:
ACCEC supports women’s groups to take leadership roles in climate action projects, such as tree planting and water conservation initiatives.
Bigger Picture:
Women as Climate Leaders
When women are empowered, entire communities benefit. Studies show that women-led initiatives in agriculture, water management, and clean energy adoption are more sustainable and impactful. By investing in women, we are investing in the resilience and prosperity of families, communities, and the planet.
