🌱 CHILDREN’S MONTHLY GATHERING IN UGANDA— FIRST LAUNCH ON 20TH SEPTEMBER 2026

On 20th September 2026, we launched the first Children’s Monthly Gathering in Lira, Uganda—a small beginning with a big vision.

The gathering brought children and parents together for fellowship, food, fun and community interaction. We started with one sheep for the communal meal, but we already see the potential for the number of children and families to grow significantly.

Going forward, we hope to introduce inspirational talks, dance, drama, quizzes, music, games and other activities led by young people and community leaders.

We also hope to gradually acquire facilities such as a sound system, musical instruments, bouncing castle, merry-go-round and mobile swimming pool.

Our long-term goal is sustainability: free use for children during the monthly gathering, while facilities can generate income at other times to support maintenance and future activities.

From Waste to Wealth is an initiative aimed at transforming plastic and other waste materials into economic opportunities by equipping young people with skills, supporting recycling enterprises, creating employment and improving household incomes.

⚽ A CALL TO UNLOCK THE POTENTIAL OF WOMEN’S FOOTBALL IN LIRA, LANGO & NORTHERN UGANDA

With the upcoming commissioning of Akii Bua Olympic Stadium to international standards in February 2027, Lira and the wider Lango Sub-region have a unique opportunity to transform women’s football.

We must invest in women’s football from the grassroots up, focusing on quality coaching, talent identification, infrastructure, mentorship and strong stakeholder partnerships. The transformation of the women’s game begins with the coach, but it must be supported by a committed ecosystem.

Our girls deserve the same opportunities, investment and encouragement afforded to boys. We must create pathways that allow them to develop from grassroots football into competitive and professional levels.

Lango is rich in football culture and has one of Uganda’s most passionate football fan bases. With the right investment and partnerships, Lira and Northern Uganda can become a major hub for women’s football in Uganda.

I therefore call upon Governments, FIFA, Global Citizen, FUFA, football clubs, Schools, Academies, Private-sector players, Development partners and International Organizations to rally behind this opportunity.

GDI-Uganda welcomes partnerships of all kinds to help unlock the potential of girls and women in football.

‎The number of people who have died in Karamoja, in the North Eastern part of Uganda, amid a worsening hunger crisis has risen to 19, as vulnerable communities await the government’s emergency food relief programme.
‎
‎The government has announced plans to distribute 20 kilograms of maize flour (posho) and 10 kilograms of beans to each household affected by the crisis.
‎
‎However, residents and local leaders say the allocation may only provide temporary relief as prolonged drought continues to destroy livelihoods across the sub-region.
‎
‎While the planned intervention has offered some hope, many families say the food quantities will not last for even a week because of the large size of the households. They urgue that the proposed ration is inadequate for many families.
‎
‎In Nawanatau Village, 75-year-old Lomongin Lomer heads a household of 20 people, including three wives, children, siblings and other dependants.
‎
‎The family says the government ration would likely be consumed within a few days.
‎
‎In another household, 70-year-old Munyes Nakain, who cares for 15 people, said her family is eagerly waiting for the relief food despite concerns that it will not last long.
‎
‎Adupa suggested that; “Government should establish feeding centres where vulnerable people can receive breakfast, lunch and supper. That would help sustain families for a longer period,” she said.
‎
‎In Arechek Village, residents point to the grave of Veronica Nachuge, whom they say died after spending several days without food.
‎
‎Parish Chief Peter Lotukei of Nawanatau said three hunger-related deaths have already been recorded in the parish.
‎
‎Children and older persons remain among the most affected groups, with some households reportedly surviving on residue from locally brewed sorghum b**r after exhausting their food supplies.
‎
‎Maria Lochoro, the elderly representative for Loputuk Sub-county, said; "drought has severely affected food production in the area". The sun has been too hot.

Another World Class Akii Bua Olympic Stadium is taking shape in Lira City, Uganda, with a state-of-the-art 20,000 seater facility. Executive Director of GDI-Uganda, Kenneth Allan Owani, visits the construction site on 9th Day of June 2026, and has this to say. "This is not just a sports venue; it is a catalyst for sports development of young talents, economic recovery, national prestige, tourism, and long-term urban development, in the area that has long suffered from the 21 year civil war".

Economically, we believe that this International stadium will create jobs among young people to avert youth unemployment in the area. The stadium will attract tourists, athletes, officials, and media, generating revenue for local businesses. It will stimulate investment in surrounding infrastructure and urban development. He added.

He concluded that, above all, in the Sports Development; it will provide a world-class facility for training and competitions, Encourage participation in sports among young people and shall become a center for national and regional sporting events after the Olympics.

This is an opportunity for young people to raise talents, build capacity in inclusive education and sports and thanked the Government of the Republic of Uganda, for coming up with this project praising that it has come at the right time the people of Northern Uganda and world over needed it most.

GDI-Uganda, has this 30th October, 2025, done it again! We remain a voice and a hope to the communities where climate change has severely affected. In a country Uganda, where effects of climate change remains unprecedented with severe rainfall causing floods, loss of lives and general damages. Sometimes too much sunshine that destroys all food crops leading to financial losses and food insecurity. We therefore, come in to provide redress through practising climate smart agriculture interventions. We provided agricultural farm inputs like 39 packets (2kgs each packet) of high yielding and fast growing DK777 maize seeds to two youth groups as means of coping mechanism. We also provided other agro inputs like hybrid egg plant ARJANI, tomatoes Asnal F1, watering cans, spray pumps, green pepper Kaveri F1 and others to two parent's groups. We live to our promises and continues to touch more lives, families and communities. Together, let us combat climate change and fight hard to ensure food sufficiency at household levels and overcome poverty. With your support, we can reach out to more communities in Uganda.
