NUHC was founded in 2009 in Gulu, and in 2010 Benny brought NUHC to Kitgum to be established as a community-based organization (CBO) to empower youth through hip-hop. Today, NUHC remains one of the most active youth-led and youth-focused organizations in Kitgum, and perhaps in Northern Uganda. Throughout the years, we have come to focus our lens specifically on serving our community. We use the ta
lents of the members to improve the lives of our fellow youth through daily breakdancing, rap and graffiti sessions, as well as organized outreaches in the prison and trading centers promoting both hip-hop skills as well as awareness around HIV/AIDS and malaria prevention, WASH, IGAs, and the like. Furthermore, we promote organizational and financial sustainability through agriculture markets, merchandise sales, and community performances. As we move forward as NUHC, we hope to expand our reach further into the surrounding villages and neighboring districts in order to both promote awareness of hip-hop as a means of positive self-expression and empowerment among the youth, and improve the lives of individuals in our community. We have been fortunate to work with influential organizations such as StraightTalk, Bayimba, and Peace Corps to help with the development and capacity building of NUHC. Of course, as we march forward in pursuit of our goals we face obstacles along the way— such as financial barriers, community understanding of our work, and access to information, networks, and resources (problems stemming from working in the rural north). However, we know it is in the face of challenges where strengths are identified and opportunities arise; therefore, we never lose hope, and we continue to use our talents and passion to make our communities and the world a better place through hip-hop.
