To be part of the mission of Jesus and His church is a tremendous honor. “Mission”means being sent by God to do His work or will. The concept of mission runs from Genesis to Revelation. It starts with God the Father sending Jesus, and concludes with Jesus sending His followers to help and tell others about God. To properly execute the mission of the church, we must know the power of the Holy Spirit. Mark the word “know.” That word carries a deep meaning. It means to experience, care for, and have a deep, personal, and active relationship with someone or something. It implies loyalty and active commitment, like a close marriage or family bond. We cannot make the mission of Jesus and His church our mission without the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit empowers us for mission. He connects us with the power far beyond ourselves. Through his power we can do things we could never do by ourselves. We empty ourselves and take the form of Jesus’s incarnation ministry and accept humility and obedience and appear as servants. As a church we must be a servant to minister in the world and to carry out the mission of Jesus. Notice, “And being found in human form he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross” (Philippians 2:8). May God find us faithful!
