At Sesse Farm Institute, which is the only institute in Sesse islands,we were able to train veterinary students on the recent guidelines of animal welfare best practices generally with specifics to fish welfare. we were joined by curriculum developers at the institute who emphasized that effective aquaculture starts with taking care of fish comfort and welfare. We also got a chance to engage with local fish farmers at Lutoboka fish site who benefited from the institute's vast resources and practical research.

over 313 students and 39 fish farmers were able to benefit from our first informative session. we wenaheadad to conduct a post survey on how a sound policy should look like in conforming to international welfare guidelines. our team was interested in getting tailor-made specific fishspeciese guidelines to amplify welfare practices right from community to relevant policy makers.

Voices spoke! with our bottom up strategy, local leaders from all the 48 islands of Sesse convened at lutokoba landing site to dialogue on policy reforms aimed at improving fish welfare, we presented draft fish guidelines and suggested policy reform which form our next step of the project, our areas of focus included revising some provisions of the Fish Act including handling, transportation, health,harvesting and habitation, we also deliberated on bringing the Fish Act in conformity with the Prevention of animal Cruelity Act of 2023, the idea of the dialogue was to make tailor made suggestion that are attainable, cost effective and make economic sense of to the farmers. we are set to engage with the directorate of fisheries from the Ministry of Agriculture, the law reform commission, the courts of judicature, and parliamentarians committee on such matters shortly.
