Peer mentorship creates a space where girls can learn from someone who understands their experiences, challenges and dreams. Sometimes, hearing “I have been through this too and you can get through it” from another girl can make all the difference. That is why it is important to not only support girls but also equip them to become mentors to their fellow girls.

When a girl is given the confidence, knowledge and skills to guide another, she begins to recognise the strength in her own voice and experiences. She becomes someone another girl can look up to, talk to, learn from and turn to for encouragement.

And the impact doesn't stop with the mentor and her mentee.

Women's participation is not just about being in the room. It is about being listened to when you speak, being part of the decision not just present for it, about leading not holding a position while someone else makes the calls.

Presence without voice is not participation. A seat without power is not leadership.

Through the building assets activity, girls explored the skills, resources, relationships and opportunities they need to lead healthy, safe, and empowered lives. Using asset cards, they identified what is important at different stages of adolescence and reflected on the support they need to reach their full potential.

These conversations help ensure that girls' voices are at the center of programs designed for them creating pathways to greater confidence, opportunity and wellbeing.

In partnership with Bethany Land Institute Bethany Land Institute we supported Bukasa Primary school in Zirobwe to set up a small demonstration garden not just as a learning space but as a practical example of how small pieces of land can contribute to food security, better soils and climate resilience.

The goal was to show how schools and communities can grow their own food, integrate fast-growing trees for firewood and soil improvement, and build small-scale systems that support both people and the environment.

Today, the teacher shared a photo of a harvest from that very garden. The food was used to prepare lunch for the entire school. A meal that wouldn’t have been possible without that garden.

Agroforestry is not just about planting crops and trees. It’s about demonstrating what’s possible, building confidence and showing that solutions can start right where people are with the land they already have.

Grateful to see this impact growing quite literally.
