"Athletes facing the stress of being benched or cut from the first team frequently turn to drugs or alcohol as a maladaptive coping mechanism to self-medicate feelings of anxiety, inadequacy, and failure. When an athlete is demoted or left off the starting roster, they can suffer from a loss of identity, public embarrassment, and severe stress.
