"Athletes facing the stress of being benched or cut from the first team frequently turn to drugs or alcohol as a maladaptive coping mechanism to self-medicate feelings of anxiety, inadequacy, and failure. When an athlete is demoted or left off the starting roster, they can suffer from a loss of identity, public embarrassment, and severe stress. Without healthy coping skills, they are at a higher risk of turning to substances like alcohol, ma*****na or even performance-enhancing drugs to cope with the mental strain". - Omulangira David Lumansi, Uganda Sports Media Goat.

"When young athletes do not get adequate rest at home, their bodies enter a state of low energy availability. To combat this, they often turn to substances like prescription stimulants, caffeine pills or illicit drugs to force an energy boost. However, doing so creates multiple physiological problems". - Omulangira David Lumansi, Uganda Sports Media Goat.

"The use of performance-enhancing drugs represents a violation of sporting ethics intended to gain an unfair advantage, and to artificially alter physical recovery processes. Athletes tend to resort to substances due to intense financial and sponsorship pressures, or the desire to outperform rivals through prohibited means". - Omulangira David Lumansi, Uganda Sports Media Goat.

A real Hero is that one person who can resist drug abuse, especially in environments where it is highly prevalent or normalized. This requires immense courage, self-awareness, and strength. Choosing to stand firm against that kind of pressure truly defines a person of strong character and resilience.
