IsraAID Uganda

IsraAID Uganda We support refugees and host communities, focusing on resilience, protection, psychosocial support, and health. Active in Palorinya and Nakivale.

We build local capacity and tailor interventions to community needs, ensuring long-term, sustainable impact. ISRAAID Uganda is a non-governmental organization dedicated to supporting refugees and host communities in Uganda. In 2016, we began interventions in Adjumani, and later on expanded our efforts to Gulu at the height of the Kony War in Northern Uganda that led to thousands of displaced peopl

e. Today, we have physical offices in Moyo, Kampala, and Nakivale and also run a community resilience-building program for refugees in the Palorinya Refugee Settlement in northern Uganda. We have been in Palorinya since 2018. Last year we scaled up into the Nakivale Refugee Settlement in the country's southwest region. Our approach is participatory, focusing on local leadership and community involvement. Our team members are from the communities we serve, allowing us to build local capacity and ensure sustainable impact even after we have transitioned to new locations. Flexibility is one of our core strengths. We tailor our interventions based on the specific needs of the communities we work with, from long-term capacity and resilience building to rapid, effective emergency responses. Our activities range from Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) initiatives to promoting nutrition and health. Child-friendly spaces (CFS) are one of our cornerstone programs. These spaces serve as hubs for fostering community resilience, addressing Gender-Based Violence (GBV), and providing psychosocial support to children and their caregivers. Our holistic approach also includes door-to-door visits and referrals of cases to partner organizations for further investigation, treatment, and litigation.

As we commemorate the World Water Day and Uganda Water and Environment Week 2026, we are reminded that water is a valuable resource and an engine for social economic transformation. Despite concerted efforts in promoting access to safe water, significant global challenges persist with two (2) billion people lacking access to safely managed drinking water services exposing them to health related risks and negative livelihood consequences.

At IsraAID Uganda and in partnership with friends from BGC and GWB, we continue to prioritize sustainable access to safe water sources in Acholi Sub region. We have done this through; (1) Facilitating trainings in geophysical water exploration and borehole geophysics, (2) Borehole drilling and installation, (3) Manual hand pump repair, (4) Capacity building in water sources management,(5) Field water quality testing, (6) Microbial water testing, and
(7) Hand pump performance evaluations.

In 10 years of partnership, this is what we have achieved together;
138 young people trained in water exploration, drilling, repair, and restoration.
40 boreholes built from the ground up.
20 boreholes repaired and restored.
4 districts. One sustained mission.
4 Ministry of Water staff are now running their own surveys independently.
30,000 people have access to safe, affordable drinking water.

Behind every one of those numbers is a family that does not have to worry about water anymore.
A young person who built a business out of the knowledge acquired from the WAMTEC training and derived a livehood out of it. All this aimed at nurturing a community that owns its future. We are proud of how far this has come.

Every community we work in was selected through the community's own voice. Councillors bring water needs to district meetings. Districts put it into their development plan. We arrive to respond, not to choose.
On the ground in Oding: the borehole is to be drilled 20 metres from the road. Not by accident. Because that road is going to be widened. Whoever made that call was thinking about 2040, not just this year. 85 out of 180 households served directly so that people on both sides of the road can reach it.

In 2016, we asked a question that changed how we worked. What does a community need to recover from war?
The answer was not just water. It was work. Skills. A reason to stay. So we built both.

138 young people from the Acholi sub-region were trained in water trades. Most of them are war-affected. Most without formal qualifications. But every single one is willing to show up. Today, many have jobs. Some have businesses. All of them are home.

And because of them, 30,000 people across 6 districts now drink clean water. That is what happens when you invest in people, not just infrastructure.

🎨 Craft Time in Palorinya! 🎨

One of the favorite activities in our Child-Friendly Space is crafting! This time, the children and youth explored sculpting with clay, using the local clay-rich soil right here in Palorinya.
After shaping their creations, the children come together to paint their sculptures and share the stories behind their art. It’s a wonderful way to spark creativity!

In these photos, you can see Daniel and Bol proudly presenting their works 🌟

Last week, our ISRAAID Uganda team joined Radio Vision 89.1 FM to discuss Mpox, focusing on what it is, its causes, and how it can be prevented.
The conversation also highlighted how ISRAAID Uganda is supporting vulnerable communities through:

🧼 Providing handwashing facilities and soap to
schools
πŸ’§ Increasing access to clean water through jerrycans
and water tanks
🀝 Distributing soap to promote hygiene and reduce
the spread of diseases

By raising awareness and sharing critical resources, we aim to protect vulnerable populations and help mitigate the impact of health crises like Mpox.

CFS Impact on the community.
When children leave the comfort of their homes and forced to migrate to other countries as refugees, they usually face many challenges which pose a threat to their social-emotional development. Our CFS in Juru-Nakivale refugee settlement attracts more than 300 newly settled arrivals daily, and these are engaged on several games as well as structured activities which help them heal from traumatic experiences and prevents them from falling into the traps of harmful practices such as drug addiction and substance abuse, transactional s*x and criminal activities

🌟 Introducing the Complaint, Response, and Feedback Mechanisms (CRFM)! 🌟
In the past month, we have introduced the Complaint, Response, and Feedback Mechanism (CRFM) to the community. This system enables community members to provide feedback, ask questions, and raise concerns, ensuring transparency and accountability in our work.
Through CRFM, we give the community a voice to hold us accountable, helping us identify program needs, improve services, and receive alerts on potential tensions or security issues. It also helps us understand any unintended effects of our programs, so we can address them quickly and effectively.
