Sheila Nakabuye: Mbarara Referral Hospital has put up a facility for epileptic patients, making it one of the few that have managed to separate metal illnesses from epilepsy. The clinic is also hoped to address stigma among the affected persons. Mbarara Hospital receives about 2000 epileptic patients annually according to the director of the hospital, but a majority of these usually have severe burns because they are neglected during attacks. This is due to the myth that the disease is contagious.

DID YOU KNOW THAT ?

Epilepsy is a medical condition that produces seizures, affecting a variety of mental and physical functions, also referred to as a generalized seizure disorder. When a person experiences two or more unprovoked seizures separated by at least 24 hours, they qualify as having epilepsy.

A seizure occurs when a brief, strong surge of electrical activity affects part or all of the brain. Current statistics indicate that 1 in 10 people will experience some type of seizure during his or her lifetime.

Seizure duration can vary from a few seconds to a few minutes, and manifest in a variety of ways: convulsions (sometimes leading to a loss of consciousness), repeatedly staring into “nothingness”, lip smacking, and jerking movements of arms and legs.
