Uganda Youth and Adolescents Health Forum - UYAHF

Uganda Youth and Adolescents Health Forum - UYAHF UYAHF is a youth-led health rights and livelihood advocacy action group, established to address the health and livelihood needs of young people.

Uganda Youth and Adolescents Health Forum (UYAHF) is a youth led health rights and livelihood advocacy action group that was established in November 2011 by a group of Youth leaders and youth activists with passion in addressing human rights, health and livelihood issues of young people. UYAHF has a unique programming approach that integrates livelihood issues into health issues to give a holistic

package of safety and survival skills, information and opportunities to the young people that we serve. Our programming approach is both a rights based and needs based approach that best suites the needs and expectation of our young people. Under the Health component of our programming approach, we empower and equip young people with accurate and age appropriate sexuality education and reproductive health information. With the right information on their sexuality, young people are able to make the right choices that will lead them into either delaying or having safer sexual relations. We do all this through our regular district youth dialogues sessions and school health outreach camps and seminars with young people and other key stakeholders and policy makers. We train our members as peer educators who become community change advocates to fellow peers. Our health program also ventures into issues of health policy advocacy, maternal and child health, and gender equity issues among others. The livelihood component
Under the livelihood component, UYAHF members who have under gone our peer education training are encouraged and supported to join and undertake the entrepreneurship and skills development program. UYAHF owns an entrepreneurship and skills development workshops where young people are trained from and equipped with practical and hands on innovative and entrepreneurship skills. This program is aimed at empowering young people with self sustaining, innovative and income generation skills. At the workshop, we train young people in making products like shoes, African sandals for men and women, gladiators, bag, necklaces, belts, wallets/money pass, African wear, bangles among others. Our workshop is located in Zone 6b Muluka IV Makerere University and is entirely run by the management of Uganda Youth and Adolescents Health Forum, while our offices are located on Plot 351A Balintuma Road Nakulabye. We welcome all young people between ages 12-30 to participate in any of our program. Particular attention is how ever given to vulnerable groups of young people that include; young people that have dropped out school, teenage mother, young people living with HIV, university graduates seeking for jobs, unemployed youths and preference is given to female youths. Theme: Contraception – Your Body, Your Choice

Today we join the world to reaffirm that access to contraception is a human right and a cornerstone of adolescent and youth health.

Modern methods: pills, implants, injectables and condoms are scientifically proven, safe and effective when used correctly, yet too many young people still face myths, stigma and limited access.

LETS TAKE ACTION NOW!
✊🏾Parents & community leaders: Create open spaces for honest conversations about SRH
🤝Policy makers & health providers: Ensure youth-friendly services, affordable supplies and accurate information reach every corner of Uganda.
✌🏼Young people: Take charge of your health, seek accurate information, ask questions and choose the method that fits your life.

Together we can break barriers, protect health and give every adolescent the power to plan their future.

Contraceptions are actually a great deal for sexualy active young people in ensuring that they achieve their life goals without the interruption of un intended pregnancy. This greatly contributes to the national goal of averting teenage pregnancy.

Most importantly we need to work closely with health service providers like health facilities and health workers to ensure information about contraception and cancelling is done in the best way possible to ensure voluntary and informed choices.

🥰🥰🥳🥳Shout out to that one special Health Worker you know about in your area doing a great Job.

This we reflect that Literacy plays a crucial role in empowering young people, especially to make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health.

When women are literate, they can easily access and understand health information, navigate healthcare systems, and advocate for their rights including:

👌Understanding Contraception: Literate women are more likely to understand contraception options, benefits, and risks, enabling them to make informed choices about family planning.
👌Accessing Healthcare: Literate women can navigate healthcare systems more effectively, accessing essential services like prenatal care, maternal health services, and HIV treatment.

It’s inspiring to see our volunteer German Doctors go beyond the treatment rooms. They walk into communities, support Village Health Teams during home visits, and immerse themselves in the daily realities of the people they serve.

This relatable experience with local lifestyle help them better understand community dynamics and bridges the gap between health facilities and homes, reminding us that healthcare is not just a service it’s a shared responsibility.

Thank you Dr. Ursula Korff‑Fox and Dr. Margret Bautzare for the commitment towards community health support.

Happy new Month
After the thrilling national event to wrap up the program, last week we took it to the ground, to eastern Uganda, our districts of implementation (Bukwo,Busia and Mbale) to share the delightful moment of the program achievement and thank the community for not only embracing the project but supporting its implementation through out the 5 years.

The consortium team was lead by the team leaders of , and along with the National program coordinator and the Country management team.

This journey to the ground was not just a moment of celebration, it was an opportunity to appreciate the resilience, commitment, and partnership that have fueled the success of Power to Youth. Together, we have built a strong foundation for a future where young people, especially adolescent girls and young women, continue to have voice, choice, and control over their lives.

Healthcare is a right, yet many rural communities still lack access.

Last week at Nyanza Church of Uganda primary school,Budaka district, our community outreach stepped in offering free testing & treatment for malaria, BP, UTIs & ulcers among others.

Supported by our volunteer German Doctors Dr. Ursula Korff-Fox & Dr. Margret Bautzar, the team worked effortlessly with the facility health workers and our team to ensure every community member at the site receives the health attention they deserve.

One mother, Edinansi Takali, shared how her two children had endured sleepless nights battling malaria. Leaving the mobile clinic with medication, she said “joy flooded her heart.”

Moments like this remind us why we bring healthcare closer to communities.

Good morning Monday!
lets Burst some Family Planning Myths just alil bit!
🚫 Myth: “Family Planning means stopping women from having children.”

✅ Fact: Family Planning means planning properly for your family.

👩‍⚕️How: Family planning methods help couples and young people decide when to have children, space births, and ensure that every child is born at the right time when the family is ready socially, emotionally, and financially.

Flash back Friday!!
As you set off for your exciting weekend, just check out what you missed in our in Kalangala.

From our last weeks integrated school health outreached in several Islands of Kalangala, supported by our Power To Youth Ug youth advocates, students didn’t just learn about menstrual hygiene, they actively created sustainable solutions.

Through engaging menstrual health sessions, learners gained vital knowledge on puberty, and sustainable period management, including a hands-on session of making reusable sanitary pads. This simple yet powerful skill is helping address the persistent challenges girls face in managing their periods with dignity and confidence.

One highlight that stood out?
The active involvement of boys; listening, asking questions, and even committing to teach their sisters back home how to make reusable pads. This is a game changer! When boys understand menstrual health, it helps break stigma, dismantle harmful myths, and creates a supportive environment where no girl is left behind because of her period.

Boys’ participation in period conversations is not just about awareness, it’s about building allies who champion girls’ health, rights, and dignity in their families and communities.
