Extreme poverty persists when multiple barriers reinforce one another. A pathway out must address them together.

Today, at the National Ultra-Poor Graduation Model and Self-Reliance Index Symposium, Rozina Haque, Director, Ultra-Poor Graduation & Livelihoods at BRAC International, shared how BRAC’s Graduation approach combines holistic, carefully sequenced interventions to empower people to build sustainable pathways out of poverty.

The approach recognises that livelihoods, food security, financial inclusion and social support are deeply interconnected. It reaches households facing the greatest exclusion, tailors support to their circumstances, and tracks progress to ensure interventions respond to participants’ evolving needs.

When young people have the space and confidence to use their voices, they can influence decisions that affect their lives and communities.

At Wakiso District Headquarters, BRAC-supported Youth Advocates presented issues raised by young people on access to and quality of health services, bringing their priorities directly to key stakeholders.

The dialogue created space for to raise their priorities, engage decision-makers and call for action to strengthen health service delivery.

BRAC Uganda joins stakeholders at the National Symposium on the Ultra-Poor Graduation Model and the Refugee Self-Reliance Index as we explore evidence, innovations, partnerships and practical solutions for advancing sustainable livelihoods and self-reliance in Uganda.

Happy International Literacy Day!

The ability to read, write and understand the world around us can shape how a child learns, communicates and imagines their future.

Yet millions of children and adults still face barriers to acquiring these essential skills.

This International Literacy Day, hashtag Uganda celebrates the power of hashtag to build confidence, widen opportunities and help learners participate more fully in their communities and beyond.

Because when people can read, they can learn. And when they can learn, new possibilities begin.

Youth action looks like young people using their voices to drive positive change in their communities.

As part of our Youth Celebration activities, we held a district stakeholder and service provider dialogue at Mugusu Health Centre III in Kabarole District, bringing together Youth Advocates, health workers, district leaders and community representatives to discuss access to Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) services for adolescent girls and young women (AGYW).

Supported through our youth empowerment programme, Youth Advocates presented an issue brief highlighting key challenges affecting service delivery, including health worker shortages, SRH commodity stock-outs, infrastructure gaps and the need for more youth-friendly services.

The conversation opened space for district leaders and health service providers to listen, respond and commit to practical actions, including strengthening youth-friendly spaces, improving access to SRH commodities, addressing infrastructure needs and increasing SRHR awareness.

Empowering women through skills acquisition

Skills development is an initial step in our approach to supporting women’s transition to sustainable livelihoods. Practical training equips women with the knowledge and capabilities to pursue economic opportunities and make productive use of the resources available to them.

Today, we celebrated young women who completed TVET vocational training and are now moving into applying their skills with start-up support to establish income-generating enterprises.

What Youth Action looks like.

In Amuru District, Rose Mooyo is tackling post-harvest losses by turning surplus mangoes into value-added products through Rosalba EcoWave Company Limited.

Her story points to something important: youth action is not only about having ideas. It is about recognising a gap, taking initiative and building a response that has value for others.
