Single Mother’s Relief Uganda (SMRU) is a Non Profit Community Based Organization that aims to empower poor and marginalized single mother and her family in Uganda to increase her household incomes and also aims to provide a forum through which marginalized Single mother can fearlessly campaign for the respect of her rights, especially to property and custody of her children, as equal members of s
ociety. SMRU was started in May 2017 and is registered with the government of Uganda. SMRU campaigns to achieve equality of opportunities for a single mother whether widowed, divorced or separated regardless of tribe, race, nationality, gender, or religion. SMRU is concerned with promoting the welfare and socio- and economic development of a single mother and her households. There are very many people living in Single Parent Families in Uganda; a vast majority of whom live on less than a dollar (US) a day. SMRU mobilizes single mothers into smaller units, “SMRU groups”, reflective of the different areas in which they live and also areas in which SMRU operates. It is through these groups that SMRU extends support to the single mothers and members of their families through the creation of money generating activities like caking baking, hair dressing to mention but a few. SMRU supports poor and marginalized single mothers in Uganda to attain the betterment of their socio-economic livelihoods and also to achieve the respect of their rights as equal members of society through empowering the single mother to carry out activities that can generate a sustainable household income and also empowering her to become more savvy of her rights and roles in her community.
