In Uganda, one in ten people use to***co daily, and exposure to second-hand smoke can cause a range of serious health effects in people who do not smoke. Children and young people are especially vulnerable, having little to no choice in their exposure. Research shows that young people are at risk, with 20% (1.7 million) of people between the ages of 13 and 15 exposed to to***co smoke at home and 30% (2.7 million) exposed to it in enclosed public places.

The country passed the To***co Control Act and Regulations in 2015 and 2019, respectively. These protect the public, including children and youths, from the harmful effects of to***co. Article 17 bans the sale of to***co products to and by minors under the age of 21, and Article 14 bans advertising, promotion, and sponsorship by the to***co industry and makes provision for 100% smoke-free public places.

One of the educational barriers in Uganda is unequal access to education throughout society. Uganda has one of the highest rates of exclusion from education in the world. Around 20 percent of primary school children are not enrolled in school, and 12.5 percent of those who were enrolled in school are not attending classes. School charges, inadequate infrastructure, and socio-economic disparities are some of the factors that contribute to these barriers. Financial restraints and the cost of education are major barriers that prevent children from accessing education. Most households face rising and unpredictable school fees, which lead to students dropping out of school.

Menstrual hygiene is a critical aspect of girls’ health and well-being. However, in Uganda, many girls lack access to sanitary products, forcing them to resort to unhygienic methods to manage their menstruation.
According to a study by the Ministry of Education and Sports, 70% of girls in Uganda use unhygienic materials, such as soil, banana fibers, and old clothes, to manage their menstruation. These materials are not only unhygienic but also cause discomfort, skin irritation, and other health problems.
WISHING YOU A HAPPY INTERNATIONAL MENSTRUAL HYGIENE DAY.
