GIZ Uganda Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ) supports sustainable development in Uganda

GIZ operates in more than 130 countries worldwide with over 16,510 staff with a business volume of over EUR 1.9 billion as at 31 December 2013.

This page features what GIZ is doing in Uganda especially in the several sectors that we offer technical assistance. Most of our work is commissioned by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). We also operate on behalf of other German Ministries like the Federal Ministry of the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, and the Foreign Office. GIZ Uganda has also been commissioned to work in several sectors by development agencies like the European Commission, DFID, and USAID.

General information

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is a federal enterprise that supports the German Government in achieving its objectives in international cooperation for sustainable development. GIZ offers workable, sustainable and effective solutions in political, economic and social change processes. The country office in Uganda was established in 1974 and the German Cooperation with Uganda had started earlier in 1964. Today, there about 27 seconded staff, 113 national personnel, 27 development advisors and 7 CIM integrated experts working in Uganda. Most of our work is commissioned by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). We also operate on behalf of other German Ministries like the Federal Ministry of the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety and the Foreign Office. GIZ Uganda has also been commissioned by development agencies like the European Commission, DFID, USAID to work in several sectors.

Products

GIZ offers technical support to three focal areas: Renewable energies and energy efficiency, Rural development and Water and sanitation. Other areas of cooperation are human rights, good governance and transparency and accountability, climate change mitigation, preservation of peace in northern Uganda, and capacity development for evaluation and governance statistics.

Renewable Energies

We support the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development to improve policy framework conditions as well as promote use of renewable energies.

Agricultural Rural Finance

Through advisory services to the central bank, (Bank of Uganda), GIZ supports efforts to improve the framework conditions for an inclusive and stable financial sector.

Water and Sanitation

GIZ strengthens institutional, regulatory and business competences, as well as efficiency of partner institutions, and supports implementation of Ugandan’s reform of the urban water sector.

Climate change

We support the Ugandan government and private sector to participate in carbon market mechanisms such as CDM and promote sustainable and green development paths.

Human Rights

Support to adherence to human rights especially the rights of vulnerable groups is also part of GIZ’s commitment to sustainable development.

Governance

GIZ works with government bodies to ensure good governance

Regional Interventions

Both nationally and internationally, GIZ supports the Nile Basin Initiative in planning and coordinating sustainable management of water resources in the Nile Basin.

Private Sector

GIZ also engages in partnerships with the private sector to foster innovation and new modes of finance.

GIZ offers workable, sustainable and effective solutions in political, economic and social change processes. GIZ operates in more than 120 countries worldwide. The German cooperation with Uganda started in 1964 and GIZ has been operational in several sectors since then.

Most of GIZ’s work is commissioned by the Federal Ministry for Economic cooperation and Development. However, other German Ministries like the Federal Ministry of the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, and the Foreign Office also entrust GIZ with commissions in several sectors.
