On behalf of the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, Mr Patrick Menya highlighted what they have so far done in supporting persons with albinism and other disabilities, but called for the need to do more work. He said that the ministryis working with CDOs to ensure that persons with albinism are fully included as beneficiaries in relevant programs.

From the Ministry of Health- Uganda, Dr George Upenthyo said that disability support is more than just services-it’s equity, fairness and addressing real needs. He pointed out that as a ministry, their approach prioritizes equity, recognizing that some individuals and families require more support to fully participate and thrive in society.

In his remarks during the awareness session in Buikwe District, Dr. Katamba Allan Semakula, the District Health Officer (DHO), reflected on whether albinism should be classified as a disability — noting that only the visual impairment aspect may justify such classification.

He emphasized that persons with albinism share similar health and lifespan outcomes with others, and their condition does not worsen over time. Citing examples from The River Between, he highlighted the historical exclusion of people with differences and called for a renewed commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Dr. Semakula urged for the empowerment of persons with albinism to participate fully in their communities, including in leadership roles. He also stressed that healthcare services must treat all individuals with dignity and equality.

Concluding his remarks, he underscored the importance of empathy — reminding everyone to reflect on how their actions impact others and to foster a more inclusive and compassionate society.
