ZONTA INTERNATIONAL
Advancing the Status of Women Worldwide

HISTORY
Zonta International was founded by one of the first generation of university -educated women, Marian de Forest, in Buffalo, New York, USA in 1919. Early members were also first generation of women University graduates, first generation of North American women to vote, and a part of the growing, though still comparatively small,

legion of women entering the workforce. Membership grew rapidly and by 1920, a confederation of nine Zonta clubs had formed with 600 members. Over the decades, Zonta International has grown into a worldwide service organization of executives in business and the professions working together to advance the status of women. There are more than 30,000 members in more than 1,200 clubs in 65 countries all over the world. OBJECTIVES
To improve the legal, political, economic, educational, health and professional status of women at the global and local level through service and advocacy. To work for the advancement of understanding, goodwill and peace through a world fellowship of executives in business and the professions. To promote justice and universal respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. To be united internationally to foster high ethical standards, to implement service programs, and to provide mutual support and fellowship for members who serve their communities, their nations, and the world. VISION FOR THE FUTURE
Zonta International envisions a world in which women’s rights are recognized as human rights and every woman is able to achieve her full potential. In such a world, every woman is literate and has access to education, health care, legal and economic resources on an equal basis with men. In such a world, no woman lives in fear of violence.
