We are proud to share Nexus+, our 18-month critical infrastructure initiative piloted in Eastern Uganda.

Supported by Engineers Without Borders International and funded by Trimble Inc. Nexus+ addresses a core challenge:
Local government funds exist for basic services, but district parishes lack the data, tools, and engineering capacity to access them.

The Nexus+ model is delivered in 3 phases, with communities at every step:

1. Data & Mapping - Students map assets and needs alongside community members using Trimble GIS
2. Co-Design - Feasibility and master planning shaped by local input and women engineering leaders
3. Investment - Data-driven proposals to unlock funding for community-governed infrastructure

Right Now๐Ÿ“Œ
Students from Kyambogo University and Uganda Christian University have spent a week in Kumi collecting data, mapping and evaluating assets.

In this video, students share their experiences and learnings and how the NEXUS+ has challenged their beliefs.

This is what learning looks like in the Nexus+ Programme.

Ainamani Rachel from Uganda Christian University shares her first-time experience engaging with bull ploughing in Kabura Village, Kumi district . Itโ€™s one of many hands-on experiences our students are being exposed to through Nexus+.

The Nexus+ Programme gives engineering students an opportunity to interact with communities to build practical understanding and apply principles of socially responsible engineering.

Nexus+ Asset Mapping and Evaluation
Day 2: Focus Group Discussions + Mapping

In the second half of the day, students-guided by mentors conducted focus group discussions with residents of Otada and Aduka villages in Oseera Parish, Kumi District.

The discussions centered on community needs, priorities, and existing resources.

Following the engagements, students conducted asset mapping across the villages. Key assets documented included water sources, health facilities, household cooking facilities, income-generating activities, road networks, and other critical community infrastructure.

This qualitative and spatial data will complement the technical surveys to inform evidence-based, funder-ready master plans for Kumi District.

Thanks to Trimble Inc. for providing state-of-the-art GNSS surveying tools and funding that made this evidence-based data collection possible.

Day 2: Nexus+ Community Field Data
Collection & Asset Evaluation

Today, students from Kyambogo University and Uganda Christian University conducted asset mapping and facility evaluations at Oseera Health Centre Il, where an upgrade of the facility to a health center lll is currently underway.

Leveraging Trimble Inc. GNSS surveying tools, the students collected evidence-based data that will inform the development of funder-ready master plans for Kumi District.

We extend our appreciation to Engineers Without Borders International for coordinating this strategic partnership, and to Trimble Inc. for their generous support in funding this high-impact initiative.

Today marked our first student field deployment. A cohort of 26 engineering students, including 8 women, will spend the next 5 days on the ground in the parishes of Kabura, Osere, and Mukongoro, collecting critical data that will shape the next phase of the project.

Delivered in collaboration with Engineers Without Borders - East Africa, students from Uganda Christian University and Kyambogo University will work alongside communities across Kumi and Iganga Districts. Through community mapping, household surveys, and infrastructure asset audits, theyโ€™ll help build the evidence base to inform future master planning.

This is more than data collection. Itโ€™s about students learning in community, and communities being at the center of design.
Thanks to the support of Trimble Inc.
