Watoto Wasoka

Watoto Wasoka Changing lives, one game at a time. Watoto Wasoka uses football to improve health and learning for underserved children in Uganda.

Our play-based, peer-led programs build life skills, promote mental wellness, and create brighter futures through sport. WATOTO WASOKA was founded in 2009. We are a local NGO in the heart of Kampala’s slums. We are a non-profit, youth-led, community development organisation that uses football as a vehicle for social change in the life of slum children in Uganda. We aim to change lives, one game at

a time, by creating purposeful opportunities for play through structured football programs. As such, we use football as our main attraction and medium of expression. As one of our main support concepts, we facilitate access to primary and secondary education for slum children. Through our close ties with the local slum football scene and public and private schools, we have a unique network which has enabled more than 500 kids to attend school which they would otherwise not have. We also run two of Uganda’s most exciting football events for disadvantaged youths: the annual Christmas Camp and Slums Derby, whose last editions were attended by 2,200 and 700 kids from all across Uganda respectively.

More than a tournament. A movement of hope, opportunity, and community impact. The 11th edition of the Slums Derby in 2025 took place on May 17–18 at Makerere University Grounds.

Over 2,000 youngsters, featuring U-13 boys and U-14 girls from communities across Kampala and surrounding areas, came together for one of East Africa’s biggest grassroots football tournaments focused on using football for social change.

The tournament began with 96 boys’ teams battling through the opening stages, creating a weekend filled with energy, talent, resilience, and unforgettable moments.

But beyond the competition, the Slums Derby created something bigger:

- Clean water for participating children
- Meals throughout the tournament
- Medical support and safe spaces
- Opportunities for children to play, belong, and dream

For many of these children, the Slums Derby is more than football. It is a platform for confidence, connection, joy, and hope. We celebrate the continued journey of using sport to transform lives.

This Wednesday, we look back at the 2026 Women’s Derby by held on 7th & 8th March and the impact it continues to create.

At Watoto Wasoka, football isn’t the end goal; it’s the entry point. What the Women’s Derby creates goes far beyond the pitch:

- Safe spaces where girls can show up and be themselves
- Confidence built through play and shared experience
- A true sense of belonging and connection
- Pathways into leadership, learning, and wellbeing

Because for many girls, opportunities like this are still rare. And moments like these don’t just matter; they open doors that have been closed for too long.

This is not a one-off event. It’s a growing movement. Each year, it gets bigger & more meaningful. The impact this year - 430 girls this year.

But beyond the numbers, the mission is simple:

- More girls who feel seen.
- More girls who feel they belong.

Because in the end, it’s about how girls begin to see themselves, and what they believe is possible.

Children in Uganda’s slums face real barriers to Education and health: Classrooms are overcrowded, mental health is rarely addressed, hygiene is poor, and girls are too often left on the sidelines.

Yet one thing brings them together: football 😊 ⚽

We meet children where they are - on the pitch! And we use the game they love to spark learning, resilience, and inclusion.

When you empower a girl, you change the game - Kilabila Angel Shalom is living proof.

From humble beginnings in Kosovo to earning a place at St. Noa Girls Secondary School, her journey shows what happens when girls are given the chance to rise. Through football, Angel didn’t just find her talent, she found her voice, her confidence, and her future.

With the support of Watoto Wasoka and , she secured a full scholarship that is shaping both her education and her dreams on the pitch.

Today, she’s not just playing football, she’s representing, leading, and inspiring:

“I’m so thankful for this opportunity. I’ll keep pushing forward in both my education and football.”

Angel's story is bigger than sport. It’s about access. It’s about belief. It’s about giving girls the platform to become everything they’re capable of.

Because every girl deserves a chance to dream, and the support to achieve it 💛
