Legal Aid Service Providers Network-Laspnet

LASPNET is a national member-based NGO established in 2004 to provide strategic linkages and a collaboration framework for the Legal Aid Service Providers

The Legal Aid Service Providers' Network in Uganda (LASPNET) was conceived in early 2001 as a loose coalition to steer involvement of the private sector players in addressing the issues directly affecting the poor and their access to justice. LASPNET was also registered as a local Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) in Uganda effective 16th March 2012. This was concretised by the recent midterm re

view of the Network that involved consultations with members and various stakeholders. It highlighted three critical aspects of the coordination responsibility that are expected – a collective role bringing together different legal aid service providers for solidarity in strategising, sharing lessons and experiences while minimising duplication; capacitating them through collaborative research, and analysis, providing strategic guidance, and linking international/regional developments on legal aid to national interventions; as well as documenting, providing needed feedback, and amplifying voice on key legal aid issues at national level.

Yesterday, we hosted a monthly Fellowship & Thanksgiving under the Theme: "You don't Labour in Vain."

The event was in appreciation of God's continued mercy on the Network including the recent recognitions of the institutional head Dr. Sylvia Namubiru Mukasa.

In attendance were other medalists Ms. Lilian Adriko-the CEO of FIDA Uganda and Dr. Patricia Atim - Head-Clinical Legal Education in the Public Interest Law Clinic -Pilac

The gathering was also graced by Prof. Anthony Kakooza, President of UCLF, Ms. Margaret Sekagya-Executive Director of HRCU, Mr. Herbert Nsubuga- CEO of ACTV, Senior Pastors, Management and Staff of LASPNET.

During her speech, Dr. Sylvia Namubiru reassured the congregation how the Network is heavily indebted to the donors, membership and other stakeholders who have continuously trusted management to serve.

AWARD RECOGNITION ALERT

Today morning our CEO Dr. Sylvia Namubiru Mukasa in company of her family members and selected LASPNET staff received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Uganda Law Society Since 1956.

This meritorious award is in recognition of her outstanding work in line with advocating for access to justice for the downtrodden.

“Dr. Sylvia has dedicated the most of her professional career ensuring access to justice for all using tools like advocacy, research, litigation and diplomacy.” The citation reads in bits.

Hon. Flavia Kalule Nabagabe, Kassanda Woman MP prior to presenting her citation affirmed Dr. Namubiru’s illustrious efforts toward mentoring and uplifting fellow women.

In her acceptance speech, Dr. Namubiru commended the ULS Council led by SC Isaac K. Semakadde for having deemed her fit for such a coveted award.

She noted that the award will deepen her resolve to continue advocating for access to justice for all, in addition, to calling upon the government to fast track the enactment of the National Legal Aid law.

Other recipients of the ULS Life Achievement Award include Dr. Lina Zedriga and Kenya’s legal tech trailblazer Linda Bonyo.

Flanked by the main celebrant, LASPNET staff, in a surprise event congratulated Dr. Sylvia Namubiru Mukasa (CEO LASPNET) upon being recognized and awarded with the honour of the Diamond Medal during this year's International Women's Day celebrations at Kololo.

The Diamond Jubilee Medal is awarded to individuals who have made significant contributions to Uganda's progress.

"This recognition is no mean feat. It's an attestation of my humble contribution toward enhancing access to justice for women and girls." She jubilantly stated.

Redeem International works towards the promotion of land rights of widows in selected districts of Uganda.

Led by their Country Director Ms. Juliet Nafuna, we discussed areas of mutual collaboration, especially towards enhancing access to justice for widows.
