We are on mission to empower vulnerable women and children from the slums to break the cycle of poverty and become independent. Join us!

Hope Shine Uganda, formerly Teenage Mothers Outreach (TEMO), is a registered, non-profit organisation operating in Kampala’s slums. We serve girls in crisis pregnancies (teenage mothers) and women, by providing medical care, food, education and sustainable livelihood programs like vocational training programs. We create opportunities for vulnerable women and girls in the slums to break the cycle of poverty and THRIVE. We believes that by empowering and inspiring these women and girls to achieve their financial freedom through entrepreneurship for income generation, they will make informed decisions and to live their full God-given potential.

The Watoto History Makers from Watoto Church joined us to help make the September feeding day a success. They were with our team to help pack the food bags on Friday and showed up bright and early today to distribute them.

True to our God-first culture, the team opened the morning with praise and worship. They then shared a word reminding the ladies that God has chosen them and that He has never forgotten about them. They finished with a gentle urge to the ladies, asking them not to forget God either. To stay in the word, and to pray always.

Finally, the food was distributed.
We are so grateful to the History Makers and to you our sponsors, for partnering with us to feed the vulnerable women and children in the slums.

Many of our students never had the chance to stay in a formal school. While some left at a very early age, others never had the opportunity to attend at all. They can neither read nor write.

Because of this, we have integrated literacy into our vocational programs. Alongside learning hairdressing, tailoring and soap making, our girls are also learning how to read and write. The progress we are seeing is beautiful.

Our goal is to help our girls gain the confidence they need to thrive. Knowing how to read and write is a part.

Last week, the Hopeshine staff gathered at the Sanctuary Village for our retreat and time of prayer!

After a full tour, we went straight into prayer.
We prayed over the progress of Hopeshine.
Over future programs and the communities we are called to serve.
We prayed over Sanctuary Village and the land surrounding it.
We prayed over every crop, every building, every fish, every animal, and every person. That everything planted, built, and nurtured here would bring glory to God and be a blessing to the community around it.

As we look towards sustainability and everything God is calling Hopeshine into, we surrendered every step to Him. Because we know that unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labour in vain. (Psalm 127:1)

We cannot wait to see what He has in store!
To God be all the glory for what has been, what is, and what is still to come.

And of course, no retreat is complete without good food. We shared a meal together and thereafter, games and all sorts of fun.

Do you know about our Esther House program?

This is a transitional and temporary residential shelter where we take in the most vulnerable young mothers and their children. They are usually abused girls in the slums, with heartbreaking stories and no place to call home. When we take in these mothers, we provide holistic care and enroll them in our year-long vocational program.

After graduation, we resettle the girls with a place to call home, rent covered, household essentials, and full startup support for her business(rent and all equipment), whether that is a salon or a tailoring shop.

Yesterday, we were honoured to welcome Ms. Wendy and Ms. Prossy from the Kampala City Council Authority Probation and Child Protection Office to Hopeshine.

They had an important and much needed conversation on Gender Based Violence (GBV) and Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV). They covered:
* What GBV is
* Types of GBV
* Causes and effects of GBV
* How and where to report GBV

They also went into the mental health impact of GBV, mental illness, and the treatment and support available.

Sexual and gender based violence is extremely prevalent in slum communities. Local studies show that between 30% to 47% of women and young girls in slums experience physical or sexual abuse. Some of the girls under our care have already experienced some kind of violence.

We hope that this session equips them with the knowledge and confidence to recognise, respond to, and report such situations should they ever face them.

The women in our savings group understand this.
Day after day, selling charcoal, tending vegetable stalls, running their small businesses they faithfully set aside whatever they can.

We believe God sees every single coin.
And we are proud to save alongside these women.

Narinda Mackline is a graduate from the 2024 hairdressing class at HopeShine Vocational School.

After completing her training with us, Narinda returned home to Sheema District and built a thriving hair salon business. She later on added a skills center, where she has been teaching hairdressing to others in her own community.

And now, she’s added a new layer with tailoring officially on the curriculum.

This is incredibly heartwarming. One life changed, changing the lives of many others.
It’s the kind of transformation we pray for.

Avako Emily graduated from the fashion and design class, last year 2025.

When she joined Hope Shine Vocational, Emily was struggling to provide for her 3 children. She needed to learn a skill to be able to work.

In addition to the tailoring classes, Emily was a part of a business project at Hope shine where she learnt how to make Peanut butter and snacks.

Currently, she manages a small kiosk in Namuwongo where she does sewing using the machine that she was given at Hope Shine.

When we met her recently, she was in the process of expanding into the peanut butter business to boost her income.

She says that she is now able to take care of her children comfortably. We couldn’t be more proud!

‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ Acts 20:35

Last season, Sanctuary Farm had an abundant harvest. Recognizing the need beyond the immediate communities we serve, we identified institutions that could use some food.

So far, we have visited two schools, bringing meals to students who would otherwise go without, and we have been to three organizations. That makes five institutions, now able to provide the people they serve with some food relief.

We are grateful for every opportunity to give. And for you, who make it possible.
