Empowering Communities in Olok Subcounty, Pallisa District,Uganda:A Livestock Empowerment Initiative
In Olok Subcounty, Pallisa District, poverty is a significant challenge, with a large portion of the population struggling to meet their basic needs.
Livelihoods are largely dependent on subsistence farming, making the community vulnerable to factors like food insecurity and limited access to resources.
Problem Statement
High Poverty Levels:
Over 80% of the population in Pallisa District, including Olok Subcounty, are struggling to make ends meet.
Vulnerability:
Many households are considered vulnerable due to limited adaptive capacity and high sensitivity to various risks.
Livelihood Challenges:
1.Subsistence Farming:
The majority of the population relies on subsistence farming, making them susceptible to issues like food insecurity and limited income.
2.Illiteracy:
A high percentage of the population is illiterate, limiting opportunities for better employment and economic advancement.
3.Limited Access to Resources:
Access to essential resources like education, healthcare, and clean water is limited, further hindering development.
Specific Vulnerabilities
1.Child Vulnerabilities:
The 2014 Census revealed high levels of child vulnerability, including high rates of children not attending school, orphans, and early marriage.
2.Food Insecurity:
Food insecurity is a major concern, with many households struggling to access sufficient and nutritious food.
Addressing the Challenges:
To address these issues, Change for Change Children Foundation proposes a livestock empowerment project.
The Project aims to provide vulnerable children and families in Olok Subcounty with sustainable livestock practices, training, and resources.
This will :
1.Enhance their income generating capabilities, improve nutrition, and reduce pressure on the environment.
2.Enhance access to essential services
3. Foster economic growth ,poverty reduction and curb climate crisis
4. Support vulnerable population
