This image captures a striking contrast between natural beauty and environmental distress. At the center is a Grey Crowned Crane, the national bird of Uganda, caught in a moment of landing at its nest.
Despite the surrounding wetland degradation, the crane has returned. Our ancestors taught us to never harm a Crested Crane, recognizing it as a sacred part of our heritage. This cultural respect is backed by modern law; under the Uganda Wildlife Act 2019, killing this endangered emblem carries severe penalties, including life imprisonment or a fine of up to 20 billion Ugandan Shillings.
However, while the law protects the bird, we continue to destroy the very wetlands it needs to survive. At Green Lens International, we believe that destroying a wetlandโthe craneโs only homeโshould be viewed with the same gravity and punished with the same severity as poaching or killing the bird itself.
For World Wetlands Day 2026, we celebrate the theme โ๐พ๐๐๐๐๐๐

It is time to return to the wisdom of our elders and protect the ecosystems that define our identity.
