Yesterday, Kampala officially became the 18th city globally and the 6th in Africa to join the City Cancer Challenge network.

This milestone is more than a title, it is a commitment to transforming how cancer care is planned, delivered, and experienced in our city.

We are proud to have been part of this journey and signatories to the Memorandum of Understanding, alongside: Ministry of Health- Uganda Uganda Cancer Institute and Kampala Capital City Authority - KCCA

For us this represents another opportunity to deepen our role in advocacy, awareness, patient support, capacity building, and research ensuring that no one faces cancer alone.American Cancer SocietyCancer Research UKUICC - Union for International Cancer ControlUwocaso (Uganda Women's Cancer Support OrganisationHospice Africa UgandaNama Health ImpactWorld Health Organization (WHO)Lumps Away FoundationBless a Child Foundation@

Today, we had the pleasure of a courtesy visit from Hayley Freedman a valued friend to UCS.

During her time with the American Cancer Society, Hayley played a pivotal role in ensuring the smooth implementation of the CEMPCs project. Since 2017, this initiative has enabled us to consistently provide Cancer Education Materials to patients and their caregivers across Uganda.

These materials have become especially integral to patient navigation efforts at Uganda Cancer Institute, helping patients better understand their diagnosis, empowering them to engage in more meaningful conversations with their healthcare providers, and ultimately supporting treatment adherence. They have also proven to be a critical resource for caregivers, equipping them with the knowledge needed to provide better support, and for health workers, strengthening health education.

Her visit was not only a moment to reflect on how far we’ve come, it also created an opportunity to explore future collaborations and identify new ways we can continue working together to advance cancer control.

On Saturday 14th March, we held a radio talk show on CBS FM where Brenda Nandutu, Programs Officer at UCS, was joined by Winnifred Nabikolo, a breast cancer survivor, to discuss common myths and facts about cancer.

During the discussion, several myths were addressed, including beliefs that cancer is caused by witchcraft, that cancer is always a death sentence, that treatment such as chemotherapy kills patients, that cancer spreads from one person to another, and that cancer only affects older people.

The conversation also focused on sharing accurate information about cancer as a disease, helping listeners understand how they can take charge of their health by:
✔️ Knowing and paying attention to changes in their bodies
✔️ Seeking medical care early when they notice unusual signs or symptoms
✔️ Going for regular screening
✔️ Ensuring girls aged 10–15 years receive the HPV vaccine to help prevent Cervical Cancer

UCS is embracing the approach of involving cancer survivors in awareness efforts, allowing them to share their lived experiences and inspire hope in others.

Cancer is not a death sentence. Early detection and timely medical care can save lives.

According to GLOBOCAN 2022, these are the top 5 cancers affecting women in Uganda:

🎀 Cervical cancer
🎀 Breast cancer
🎀 Kaposi sarcoma
🎀 Non-Hodgkin lymphoma
🎀 Oesophageal cancer

These are not just statistics. They represent real women, mothers, daughters, sisters, friends, whose lives are impacted every day.

Day 28 –

As we crown our campaign, we feature Mr. Stephen Mwanje, Board Chairperson of the Uganda Rotary Cancer Programme.

He shares his experience as a caregiver to his mother, who on the 7th of February this year succumbed to cancer.

He also speaks about the Rotary Cancer Run;an annual nationwide fundraising event led by Rotary in Uganda that mobilizes thousands of participants to raise funds for cancer treatment, equipment, and infrastructure.

His story reminds us that leadership in cancer control is often born from personal experience, and that collective action can transform grief into impact.

Please watch, like, comment, and share as we close this campaign in unity and renewed commitment.
