We're honored to welcome Makone Maja, Strategic Engagements Manager at the Institute of Race Relations (IRR), as our Toast to Freedom speaker at Africa Liberty Forum 2026.

Last year in Nairobi, Makone accepted Atlas Network's 2025 Africa Liberty Award on behalf of IRR in recognition of the organization's Champions for Growth Project.

With one-third of South Africa's workforce unemployed and half the population living in poverty, IRR launched Champions for Growth to advance a practical free-market reform agenda focused on economic growth and job creation.

Through a series of policy papers, strategic media outreach, and its digital publication The Daily Friend, the initiative has helped elevate economic growth to the center of South Africa's national conversation. Today, leaders across government are proposing reforms that reflect many of the principles IRR has long championed.

Stories like IRR's are why Africa Liberty Forum matters.

Each year, the forum brings together think tanks and civil society leaders to exchange ideas, share what works, and celebrate the organizations creating measurable impact in their countries. It's where today's success stories become tomorrow's inspiration.

Throughout OBWANANYINI KUTAKA project, we carried out a training for Local paralegals this week to enhance legal literacy on laws, polices and legal frameworks on land.

The 17 local paralegals were trained by our lead counsel Kayanja Thomas on the following legal subject :
1- Land Documentation and Registration: Facilitating the formalization of land rights through support in acquiring land titles, certificates, and other legal documentation for women and vulnerable households.
2- Gender Responsive Land Governance: Promoting inclusive, accountable decision-making structures that prioritize the rights and needs of women and children.
3-Grounding Community Participation: Ensuring communities especially women are meaningfully engaged in land governance planning, implementation, and monitoring.
4-Cultural and Social Norm Change: Working with cultural and religious leaders to transform discriminatory practices around land inheritance and ownership.
5-Advocacy and Policy Influence: Engaging in multi-level advocacy to influence legal and policy reforms that protect and promote women’s land and property rights.
6-Capacity Building: Strengthening the skills and knowledge of community-based organizations, local councils, and grassroots women leaders to support and sustain land rights initiatives. Thanks to our partners international and settlement alternatives and Atlas Network.
