What does Wikimania in Paris mean for Wikimedia Uganda?

Being part of Wikimania 2026 gave our community a chance to connect with Wikimedians from around the world, exchange ideas, and see new possibilities for the work we do back home.

Now that our delegates are back, the important part begins: sharing those lessons with the wider community and turning useful ideas into action.

From new approaches to community work to conversations around the future of free knowledge, there is a lot to bring home and talk about.

From the precision of a national ceremony at Kololo to an evening of traditional food preparation near Mgahinga, these two photographs capture very different sides of life and culture in Uganda.

Congratulations to Ssemmanda Will and Happyartst, whose photographs stood out in Wiki Loves Africa 2026 in Uganda.

One reflects a moment of national significance. The other gives us a glimpse into culture as it is lived and passed on.

🏆 And the winners are in!

After weeks of capturing, sharing, and celebrating Uganda's rich rites and rituals, the official jury results for Wiki Loves Africa 2026 in Uganda are here.

This year's campaign gave us a glimpse into the many ways our communities express culture, preserve tradition, and tell their stories.

A huge congratulations to our Top 3:

The future of the internet should include every voice.

Last week, members of Wikimedia Uganda joined stakeholders from across government, civil society, academia, and the technology sector at Uganda Internet Governance Week 2026 to take part in conversations shaping Uganda's digital future.

Representing the community were Emma Oruk, Catherine Amia, Juliet Acom, Brendah Ainomugisha, and Chris Liberty Owobusingye, contributing to discussions on digital inclusion, AI, online safety, internet governance, and the future of an open and trusted internet.

These conversations matter because the internet we're building today will shape how knowledge is created, shared, and accessed tomorrow.

Today, Wikimedia Community User Group Uganda and Kabale University marked an important step forward by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen collaboration in advancing free knowledge, digital skills, and Wikimedia engagement.

The MoU was signed by Dr. Joy Constance Kwesiga, Vice Chancellor of Kabale University, and Micheal Kaluba, Executive Director of Wikimedia Community User Group Uganda, with Angume Innocent and Joan Nantumbwe serving as witnesses.

This partnership reflects a shared commitment to empowering students, growing digital literacy, and increasing Ugandan knowledge on Wikimedia platforms.

We look forward to the opportunities and impact this collaboration will create.

Today, we join the people of Buganda in celebrating the 33rd Coronation Anniversary of His Majesty Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II.

This occasion is also a reminder of the importance of documenting our history, culture, and institutions so they remain accessible for generations to come. Through Wikimedia projects, these stories become part of a freely available record that anyone, anywhere can learn from.

Wikimania 2026 brought together volunteers from across the world to celebrate, learn, and collaborate around free knowledge, and we're proud that Wikimedia Uganda was part of the conversation.

A big thank you to Geoffrey Kateregga, Sandra Aceng, W***y Ssemanda, Baluku Brian, and Micheal Kaluba for representing the community in Paris, and to the 20 volunteers who joined virtually through community sponsorship.

The conversations may be over, but the ideas are only getting started. We can't wait to share what we've learned and continue building free knowledge together.
