The URRENO idea was conceived by was conceived by a multi-disciplinary group of individuals who perceived the road safety situation of Uganda as precarious and hitherto perceived the need for advocacy and promotion initiatives for a radical transformation of the road safety perspective. It was therefore

agreed that a non-governmental organisation be initiated to articulate strategies to address the fundamental causes of road accidents in Uganda. There-after, a situation survey and brainstorming meetings were organized and out of these meetings, a mission and vision for URRENO was collectively developed

SPEED AND HOW IT INFLUENCES ROAD SAFETY

Going too fast is a risk factor in driving.
Speeding exacerbates the consequences of a crash by 60%. and in fact, the speed of the vehicle is the main factor in the severity of the injuries. WHO report establishes that at anything over 80km/h, it is virtually impossible for a pedestrian to survive being run over. The weekend crash at Kamwokya is a case in point. Excess speed continues to be a factor in nearly 90% of collisions in Uganda. Driving at high speed significantly increases both the likelihood of a crash occurring and the severity of its consequences. For every 1% increase in mean speed, there is a 4% increase in fatal crash risk. A pedestrian hit by a vehicle travelling at 65km/h is 4.5 times more likely to die than those hit by a vehicle travelling at 50km/h. Motorists must choose a safe speed based on the posted speed limit, the speed of other vehicles around them and current driving conditions.
In addition to the dangers of speeding that result in crashes, speeding can also lead to frequent speeding tickets and demiriting points on your license, increased insurance rates, increased wear and tear, and increased fuel costs.
