🌟 NextGen Researchers Spotlight: Daniel Ayo 🌟

Meet Daniel Ayo, a Medical Entomologist and Parasitologist at IDRC and a PhD candidate at Radboud University Medical Center.

Daniel coordinates the SPARTAN and Quantum projects in Kalongo, where his research focuses on understanding how artemisinin-resistant malaria infections emerge and spread in Uganda. His work bridges field entomology and laboratory science, generating critical evidence to inform resistance monitoring and support malaria elimination strategies.

Driven by curiosity and a commitment to impact, Daniel continues to strengthen local research capacity while advancing evidence for global health action.

His advice to young scientists:
Research isn’t always linear. Stay persistent, seek mentorship, and prioritize rigor over speed.

📌 Project Kick-Off: OPTIMIZE 3HP Trial

The OPTIMIZE 3HP Trial officially held its Project Initiation Meeting on 30th January 2026 at Essela Hotel.

Titled “Optimized Prevention Through Integrated Monitoring & Engagement,” the meeting marked an important milestone in the rollout of this implementation study aimed at strengthening delivery of TB preventive treatment among people living with HIV.

The project will be implemented across three districts: Mukono, Wakiso, and Kamuli, bringing together partners and stakeholders to align on objectives, implementation strategies, and next steps.

We look forward to working collaboratively to generate evidence that will inform scalable, cost-effective TB prevention approaches in routine HIV care. 💪🫁

🌟 NextGen Researchers Spotlight: Evelyn Nansubuga🌟

Meet Evelyn Nansubuga, a Laboratory Technologist at IDRC Tororo Research Clinic with a Master’s in Immunology and Clinical Microbiology.

Evelyn’s research explores how immune cells respond to malaria in children in high-transmission settings, generating evidence to support better vaccine strategies, stronger health policies, and improved child health outcomes .

Passionate about improving health in vulnerable communities, she contributes through flow cytometry, sample processing, data analysis, and scientific reporting, and has presented her work at JASH 2026. Looking ahead, Evelyn hopes to pursue a PhD and lead research on host-pathogen interactions and malaria immune evasion.

Her advice to young scientists:
Stay curious, seek mentorship, build strong networks, and don’t give up.

🌟 NextGen Researchers Spotlight 🌟
Meet Carol Kamya, a Health Economist at IDRC leading impactful economic evaluations across immunisation, HIV, malaria, and maternal and child health.

Through her work on the Uganda Zero Dose Learning Hub, Carol is helping generate evidence to identify and reach Zero Dose and under-immunized children; shaping smarter, more equitable healthcare decisions across Uganda.

Driven by a passion to make healthcare more accessible, Carol transforms complex data into practical insights that influence policy, strengthen resource allocation, and improve health outcomes for vulnerable communities.

Her advice to young scientists:
Keep learning, build your network, find mentors early, stay resilient, and never give up.

Stay tuned as we continue to spotlight the inspiring young researchers shaping the future of science and public health. 🔬✨

🌟 NextGen Researchers Spotlight 🌟

Meet Martin Okitwi, a Parasitologist at IDRC, Bioinformatics Fellow, and Lab Manager in the Parasitology Laboratory. Martin works on antimalarial drug-resistance surveillance projects across Uganda, helping researchers understand how malaria parasites respond to treatment and generating evidence that informs stronger malaria control and treatment strategies.

Inspired by a personal experience with severe malaria as a teenager, Martin’s journey into science is driven by a deep commitment to preventing others from suffering the same fate. Through his work, he contributes to protecting communities and strengthening Uganda’s response to malaria.

💬 His advice to young scientists:
Be open-minded, deliberately build knowledge, practice teamwork, look out for research gaps in your setting, and seek mentorship from field experts.

Meet Geoff Lavoy, our NextGen Researchers Spotlight ⭐

Geoff is the Data Director at IDRC, with a background in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. He was inspired to take on this role after seeing how weak data systems can slow down critical public-health decisions. Today, he leads the Data Management Centre, building reliable and secure data systems that support multiple research projects and ensure high-quality evidence drives impactful science across Uganda and beyond.

💡 His advice to young scientists:
Build strong technical skills, but never underestimate the power of communication, data only makes a difference when it can be clearly understood and used to save lives.

🌟 NextGen Researchers Spotlight 🌟

Meet Marvious Kiwanuka, a PhD student and MTG fellow working on an IDRC-supported study investigating malaria vector dynamics and residual transmission in Uganda. His research examines how changes in mosquito species, behaviour, and insecticide resistance continue to influence malaria transmission. Through field entomology, human-behaviour studies, and molecular analysis, Marvious generates evidence that helps guide more adaptive and effective vector control strategies for Uganda.

His passion for science began with a childhood fascination for insects, later nurtured through fieldwork and mentorship from Prof. Moses Kamya, Prof. Neil Lobo, Dr. Akite Perpetra, and Dr. Joanita Nankabirwa; mentors who showed him how research can directly improve community health.

💡 His advice to young scientists:
Stay curious, persistent, and open to learning. Seek mentorship, embrace challenges, and let your passion guide you, every sample collected and every idea explored brings us closer to real solutions that protect communities.
