Do you feel there is misrepresentation in how stories from your communities are told? Are you already a content creator, or do you dream of becoming a filmmaker?

Look no further, we are also looking for you.
We are building a vibrant movement of storytellers from refugee-hosting communities. And we are starting with ๐Š๐š๐ฆ๐ฉ๐š๐ฅ๐š and ๐‘๐ก๐ข๐ง๐จ ๐‚๐š๐ฆ๐ฉ.

In the journey toward promoting self-reliance among refugee communities in Uganda, one key area that must be intentionally addressed is mindset change.

Stellaโ€™s story from South Sudan is a good example. Back home, agriculture was not commonly practiced the way it is in Uganda. Unfortunately, she later found herself in a country of asylum where food was insufficient and there was no stable source of income to afford it.

Through the Refugee program, which has agriculture as one of its key components, Stella gradually embraced farming. Today, she grows crops both for home consumption and for the market, improving her householdโ€™s well-being and resilience.

Similar stories are common across the communities we serve. Many participants initially join our programs without fully understanding the value of agriculture, but through time, exposure, and practical engagement, they begin to see farming not only as a survival strategy, but also as an opportunity for growth and self-reliance.

Today, we joined the Ministry of Education and Sports, NECDA, and other stakeholders for the official launch of the National Early Childhood Care and Education ( ) Policy.

The policy is expected to strengthen holistic and coordinated approaches in the delivery, financing, and management of ECCE services to ensure quality outcomes for all children.

As one of the leading champions of Early Childhood Development in refugee-hosting communities, AYAN had an exhibition slot where we showcased how we use low-cost and locally made learning and play materials as part of our creative ECD approaches.

Through the Refugee project, we implement a 2-Generation model, where children aged 0โ€“5 are enrolled in ECD programs while their caregivers participate in livelihood activities and positive parenting trainings. We believe supporting both the child and caregiver creates a stronger foundation for long-term wellbeing.

With this new policy in place, we are optimistic that our work will continue to create even greater impact together with our valued partner, The Hilton Foundation.

Today, in the presence of the Mayor โ€“ Sanya Kirk Fixer Wilson and the Independent Diplomat, we signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Koboko Municipal Council.

Koboko has been actively advocating for urban refugees, who are often left behind in mainstream programs that mainly focus on refugee settlements. As a border town neighboring both DRC and South Sudan, AYAN sees Koboko as a strategic area for expanding its work.

Our goal in Koboko is clear: to expand youth livelihoods and economic development opportunities for both host and refugee youth through:

โ€ข Skills development (vocational, digital, and green)
โ€ข Youth entrepreneurship, incubation, and access to finance
โ€ข Partnerships for internships, apprenticeships, and job placements
โ€ข Climate-smart livelihoods and youth-led social enterprises
โ€ข Youth leadership in local economic development.

After signing the MoU, the Mayor took us on a tour of ongoing initiatives within the municipality, highlighting key areas for potential collaboration.

This milestone was made possible with the support of the Independent Diplomat, alongside fellow and Rewon.

๐ŸŽฅ SOLCO Launch in Rhino Camp

Kiryandongo and Kyaka II are already making great progress. Now, SOLCO has arrived in West Nile!

Last week, we hosted over 50 stakeholders at our center in Rhino Camp to officially launch the project in the region. The event was engaging and insightful, bringing together local leaders and partners who pledged their support for .

There was a strong call for community ownership, because lasting impact starts with the people.

In the development of a child, it is very crucial to build their cognitive skills at an early age. This is one of the main components we focus on in our interactions with children. However, it is not enough if the same is not practiced at home.

This is why we held a fun & learning session with parents whose children are enrolled in our programs.

They were taught how to mould different fruits into local play-learning materials for their children. They were also reminded how they can use this opportunity to teach children about healthy foods.

This contributes to the bigger aim of the project: to improve the holistic well-being of families in refugee settlements.

if it is promoted among all groups in the community. Thatโ€™s why this project has now taken another turn: taking the message to schools, not with AYAN or other partner organizations at the front, but with young people themselves taking the lead.

Starting with Victoria Primary School, a ๐๐ž๐š๐œ๐ž ๐‚๐ฅ๐ฎ๐› was officially launched, where students demonstrated how alcoholism in their families and communities affects them [through a drama play].

The beauty of these clubs is seeing how children use different creative approaches to pass the message, such as drama, poems, peer mediation, and storytelling. The same approach will be used in other schools where these clubs will be opened.

Most of these children come from communities that have experienced conflicts for many years. It is therefore imperative that the new generation starts speaking about peace from a very young age.

Together with UNHCR and key partners like OPM, Police, SSWABA, and KVA, we are proud to support this initiative that is empowering the next generation to become ambassadors of peace in their communities.
