The petition, dated August 3, 2026, was addressed to Speaker Jacob Markson Oboth Oboth and calls on Parliament to urgently intervene by lifting the suspensions, reopening the affected organisations, and investigating the officials responsible for the decisions. The petitioners contend that the continued suspension of the organisations has undermined constitutional freedoms, weakened democratic governance, and disrupted the work of organisations involved in governance, human rights, civic education, election observation, anti-corruption efforts, and access to justice.

A group of civil society leaders and concerned citizens has petitioned Parliament to investigate what they describe as the unlawful suspension of 10 non-governmental organisations (NGOs), arguing that the actions were taken without legal authority and in violation of the Constitution. The East Africa Law Society (EALS), together will all national bars in East Africa, the Pan African Lawyers Union, the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ Kenya), the Kenya Human Rights Commission and East Africa Civil Society Organisations Forum (EACSOF) issue this statement in light of serious and continuing concerns arising from developments in Uganda that raise prima facie questions of constitutional compliance, statutory fidelity, and adherence to the rule of law. Taken cumulatively, these developments from Uganda implicate the foundational pillars of constitutional governance:personal liberty, freedom of expression, freedom of the press, and the independence of the legal profession.
