Akina Mama wa Afrika (AMwA) is a feminist-Pan-African leadership development organization that was founded in 1985 by a group of visionary African women in the United Kingdom but later relocated to Africa with headquarters in Kampala, Uganda. Our origins go back to 1985 in the United Kingdom, where as a community based organization, we created a space for African women to organize autonomously, ne

twork with each other, share skills and expertise, identify issues of concern and speak for themselves, which was critical given that most were experiencing migrant life in the UK. Today, we focus on strengthening African women leadership with a view to empowering African Women to represent and speak for themselves in driving the agenda on issues affecting them. Translated from Swahili, our name means Solidarity among African women which symbolizes the principles of sisterhood which form our core foundation and our ethos is “Speaking for ourselves.”

We write with rage! We speak with love for our sisters whose dignity has been stripped. This statement is our collective cry against the systematic violation of women by those meant to protect us. Our homes are not theatres of state violence. Silence is no longer an option.

With 13 days to Uganda’s elections, it is disheartening to see the same pattern repeated: unconstitutional arrests of CSO and human rights actors, and the abuse of ordinary Ugandans participating as voters and campaigners. Democracy cannot exist where rights are violated. As the women’s movement of Uganda, we demand the immediate release of Sarah Bireete and all political prisoners. We call on all stakeholders and the public to hold the government accountable for upholding democratic governance and ensuring peaceful elections.

SAVE THE DATE! Join Make Way at the NGO CSW69 Forum in New York for an interactive parallel event.

Thirty years after the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, many women continue to face discrimination and marginalization. Through storytelling and a panel discussion, q***r women and women with disabilities will share their knowledge and experiences. Together, we will delve into the colonialist frames that underpin their experiences and explore decolonizing narratives on q***rness, disability and gender equality, as well as how we can effect transformative change. 🌍
