Information shared on Thursday, September 24, 2026, says Matovu lost a great deal of blood and was rushed to Kibuli Hospital. A subsequent message says the musician, known to fans as Papa Moi, has died. The band, his family and the hospital have yet to confirm his death. The account also gives no details about where the attack took place or who was involved.

Matovu, 77, helped found Afrigo Band in 1975 and led it through five decades of Ugandan music. A singer and saxophonist, he became one of the country’s most recognisable performers. Afrigo marked its 50th anniversary in 2025.
