When One Child Is Missing, We Notice

Sometimes, a child just needs someone to notice.

When Elizabeth Namususwa stopped attending school, our team paid a visit — first to her school, then to her home. We found her, sat with her family, and gently spoke with her grandmother and uncle about how much her education matters and the importance of showing up consistently.

Together, we encouraged them to walk closely with Elizabeth and to keep guiding her. They listened with open hearts and made a promise to do just that.

At ECM, this is the work — quiet, steady, and rooted in care for every child.

"All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty."
— Proverbs 14:23

A Mother's Plea for Her Children.

In a leaky, one-room shelter in Bweyogerere, Kampala, Maryum Katono fights every day to raise her three children, all with albinism. Her husband's severe workplace injury has left him unable to work consistently, plunging the family into extreme poverty.

Vital sunscreen remains unaffordable, and her eldest daughter, ten-year-old Sumaya Namakula, endures daily bullying and violence at school. Peers pinch her skin; teachers' responses often make things worse.

Katono washes neighbours' clothes for a meagre income, barely enough for food, while breastfeeding her youngest child.

"I just want my children to live safely, go to school, and be accepted like others."

At ECM Uganda, we believe albinism is not a curse — every child deserves protection, dignity, and inclusion. This is why we are intentional about walking this journey with Maryum and her three children.

"Defend the weak and the fatherless; uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed." — Psalm 82:3 💛

Nothing dims her light. 💛

Mercy is a Primary Three pupil at our Lwengo Hope Center with albinism. She stays with her aunt — her father walked away and denied her, while her mother works abroad to provide for her from a distance. Yet through it all, Mercy loves Christ, excels in her studies, and carries an unshakeable dream of becoming a doctor one day.

When her teacher noticed she struggled to copy notes from the chalkboard, ECM Uganda stepped in — taking her to Mbarara Hospital where she was recommended for eyeglasses, and ensuring her teachers give her the extra care and attention she deserves.

As Psalm 139:14 reminds us, she is fearfully and wonderfully made — and we are honored to walk alongside her. 🙏

Dreams need direction. 🎯

Last week, the NextStep program organized a Career Guidance Training bringing together ECM Uganda program participants from Senior 1 to Senior 6 across our Kampala Hope Centers — exploring career paths and setting meaningful goals.

Our trainer walked them through diverse career options and the practical steps to achieve them, while Christine Nabukenya — a NextStep program participant currently pursuing a Bachelor of Laws — challenged her peers to find mentors and role models to guide their journey.

As Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us, God's plans for each of these young people are full of hope and a promising future.
We are honoured to be instruments in His hands, helping them discover and boldly walk into everything He has purposed for them.

Annual Children’s Advocacy Camp 2026.

ECM Uganda program participants successfully concluded a five-day children’s camp organized by Uganda Child Rights NGO Network at Kyoto Retreat Center.

The event commenced with the National Launch of the Adolescent Girls Movement in Uganda, where our female beneficiaries were officially onboarded to participate. Throughout the camp, children engaged in discussions on child rights, awareness, leadership, and empowerment, equipping them with knowledge to stand for truth and justice.

The camp also celebrated excellence through the awarding of certificates to outstanding children, with the ECM Uganda team among the recognized participants. The experience concluded with a campfire gathering officiated by Mr. Mondo Kyateka, Commissioner for Youth and Children’s Affairs, who attended as chief guest and officially closed the camp.

Such partnerships empower beneficiaries to understand their rights and advocate for positive change. As Scripture reminds us in Proverbs 31:8, “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves.”

Rising Above the Odds: Kodet Mariko’s Story.

From the slums of Katwe (in Kampala) emerges a story of resilience and purpose. Meet Kodet Mariko, a determined young man who has chosen to take charge of his future by pursuing excellence in Phone Repair and Software.

As a proud Next Step beneficiary, Kodet has gone beyond expectations, proving to his trainers that he has mastered the practical skills of his trade. With two months remaining, he is now focused on sharpening his software expertise to become even more competitive.

Kodet envisions securing a job, building his experience, and eventually starting his own phone repair business. His goal is clear—to create a better life for himself while supporting his mother and siblings.

ECM Uganda hosted an exciting Saturday Club to inspire children’s faith.
Through praise, testimonies, and the story of Jesus feeding the 5,000, the children discovered that God provides for every need and equips them for life’s journey.

At ECM Uganda, we spark hope for today, tomorrow, and eternity through God’s Word—the true Bread of Life.
