Celeste Saulo , the first female and South American Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), delivered a powerful address at the opening of the 60th Session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC ) in Istanbul, Turkey, on Tuesday, January 16, 2024.

Saul stated that the IPCC's assessments have timely informed the first Global Stock Take deliberations and outcome decisions at COP28 UAE in Dubai, and that knowledge from the IPCC reports goes hand in hand with WMO's regular monitoring and reporting on the state of climate.
She also emphasized the importance of the IPCC's role in making the robust scientific case for investments across the full value cycle and highlighting the global, regional, and local changes requiring enhanced observations, adaptation, and mitigation actions.
She concluded her address by expressing her determination to maintain and strengthen the partnership with United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) and extend continued support to the IPCC community in their mission of providing policymakers with regular scientific assessments on climate change.
