We call for simplified and Decentralised Hepatitis responses, which are integrated within health systems designed for the people they serve and developed in partnership with the affected communities.

To achieve this, we can for immediate increased prioritisation of Hepatitis elimination by government. Responses must be nationally led, have the meaningful involvement of affected communities, and domestic financing must be committed or increased. WORLD HEPATITIS DAY 28TH JULY 2023
Every year on July 28th, LUGEI FOUNDATION joins viral hepatitis organizations in Uganda, East Africa, Africa and around the world in recognizing World Hepatitis Day. This awareness day serves as an opportunity to highlight the continued global burden of viral hepatitis despite the options that exist for Screening and Testing, vaccination, linkage to care, and in the case of hepatitis C, Cure.

This year, viral hepatitis stakeholders recognize the theme of β€œWe’re Not Waiting”. β€œWe’re not waiting” is a call to action. It’s a call to accelerate viral hepatitis elimination efforts and the urgent need for providing prevention, testing and treatment services for the people and communities who need it.

Many people living with viral hepatitis are not able to access effective medical care due to financial barriers, social stigma, bureaucratic β€œred tape”, or lack of easily accessible services (geographic service barriers). These obstacles significantly hinder the ability for the world to eliminate viral hepatitis, as many countries pledged to do by 2030.

This year, LUGEI FOUNDATION, the science of changing lives will be shining a spotlight on Hepatitis B and C around the Community groups and Institutions of higher learning such as Clarke internationaluniversity (CIU) on today's theme 'We’renotwaiting' it is a call to accelerate elimination efforts of viral Hepatitis now and the urgent need for testing and treatment for the real people who need it as they make change happen in their own lives and in the communities around them.

In Uganda, Hepatitis B is much more widespread than Hepatitis C, and undiagnosed and untreated while H epatitis C is the biggest villain with no response currently going on and Hepatitis B the Winner with close to 4 million people screened so far, close to 5000 enrolled on free care and more than 30% able to access free testing and screening services. Hepatitis B and C is the major cause of liver cancers in Uganda which causes over 80% of all liver cancer related cases.
