Film Possible is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing comprehensive and year-round support to the next generation of independent African filmmakers. Our mission is to empower both emerging and established African filmmakers through our programs and initiatives. The organization aims to discover, support, and inspire independent film and media artists from Africa while actively working

to cultivate new audiences. To achieve our goals, we have developed a model that offers a variety of initiatives throughout the year. These include the Matatu Film Stage, a screening and distribution platform; the Matatu Film Fund, a film funding program for new projects; the Matatu Film Residency, a residence program for East African documentary filmmakers; and a Filmmaking Mentorship Series that focuses on building the skills and capacity of emerging and established filmmakers. At Film Possible, we recognize the importance of sharing African stories to preserve and elevate the culture, history and contribute to the social and economic development of the continent. We are aware that many talented filmmakers face challenges in producing their films due to financial constraints, limited technical know-how, and limited networks. Film Possible provides a platform and acts as a bridge to address these challenges. Our organization prioritizes diversity and advocacy, emphasizing originality, creativity, and social values to foster a meaningful and vibrant dialogue transcending borders. This approach empowers Africans to embrace and share their own stories and values. By encouraging risk-taking, experimentation, discovery, and innovation, Film Possible strives to foster a forward-thinking environment that supports a new generation of filmmakers in realizing their creative visions from start to finish. We firmly believe that Film Is Possible!

Last night was nostalgic. 🎬πŸ”₯

As part of the Francophonie Film Screenings, we tapped into the Kibanda experience with VJ Emmy live on the mic. Fully in it, reacting, translating, and pulling everyone into the film.

People laughing, talking back, leaning in. The whole room felt alive. 🎀✨

This is how many of us grew up watching films. Loud, shared, and full of life. And it’s still happening, still shaping how people experience cinema today.

This weekend, 21st March 2026, we shift the experience outdoors.

Come watch the film under the open sky, surrounded by community and fellow cinema lovers. πŸŒ™πŸŽ¬

Today, we officially wrapped up an intensive and inspiring 5-day creative bootcamp of the Zanzibar 🎬✨

It has been an exciting journey of sharing knowledge, building skills, and working closely with Zanzibar filmmakers as they developed and produced their own stories 🌍🀍

Over just five days, we collectively developed and produced three short documentary films, which were presented and screened today 🎞️πŸ”₯ While there is still work ahead to fully complete them, the foundation is solid, the voices are clear, and the vision is strong.

Huge gratitude to our incredible mentors; .musoke and SAID who guided the process with generosity and care πŸ™πŸΎβœ¨

And heartfelt thanks to our partners and collaborators who believed in this lab and made it possible.

The journey continues 🚐πŸŽ₯

The Matatu Film Lab is currently underway in Zanzibar at the Emerson Zanzibar Foundation. 🌴🎬

This is an intensive, hands-on creative bootcamp designed to support and upskill filmmakers based in Zanzibar. Over the course of five focused days, participants are given the tools, mentorship, and space to explore documentary storytelling rooted in their own lived realities and communities. 🌍πŸŽ₯

The challenge is ambitious. In just five days, the filmmakers are working to develop, shoot, edit, and present three short documentary films, taking each project from concept to screen. πŸ”₯🎞️
This edition serves as a pilot for a much bigger vision. One that is centered on strengthening creative skills, growing confidence, and contributing meaningfully to the creative economy by opening up real opportunities for filmmakers on the ground.

The is a Film Possible initiative dedicated to nurturing and amplifying African cinema through holistic, hands-on filmmaking training across the continent. We believe that when filmmakers are supported locally, with the right resources and trust in their voices, powerful stories emerge.

This Zanzibar Edition is made possible with the support of Emerson Zanzibar Foundation, Emerson Zanzibar, Salme Museum, Zanzibar Film Producers Guild and it couldnt happen without the amazing Salma Adim.

More to share soon as the films take shape.
