Art as a Bridge of Memory and Identity: “Al-Manal” Exhibition by Sulafa Mubarak Showcases Sudan’s Spirit in Kampala
Issued by the Media Office – SAWA Center for Peace and Justice Research
The city of Kampala hosted the “Al-Manal” art exhibition by Sudanese visual artist Sulafa Mubarak on 15–16 November, marking her first exhibition outside Sudan. The event was organized in partnership with Al-Manal Center, SAWA Center for Peace and Justice Research, and Bana Group for Peace and Development, offering a rich artistic and cultural experience that highlighted the depth of Sudanese identity.
Sulafa Mubarak, a student at the College of Arts, University of Khartoum (Al-Neelain University), presented a compelling body of work that blends visual art and music. Each painting was paired with a specific song that reflected its meaning and emotional tone, creating a multi-sensory experience for visitors. Her pieces explored themes of cultural memory, peace, and the resilience of Sudanese society in the face of war and the legacies of colonization.
The exhibition also featured dialogue sessions led by cultural researcher Hamza Adam (Castro), who discussed the roots of Sudanese culture, the impact of political and social crises, and the vital role of the arts in safeguarding identity and promoting peace.
The final day of the exhibition concluded with a memorable artistic performance:
Artist Fox delivered live vocals rooted in authentic Sudanese rhythms, accompanied by Carlos on the saxophone in a beautifully synchronized musical duet. The fusion of traditional beats with modern instrumental expression created a warm and uplifting atmosphere that resonated with the audience.
“Al-Manal” stood out for its ability to connect with visitors on an emotional level, as every artwork invited reflection and engagement through color, symbolism, and sound. The exhibition demonstrated that young Sudanese artists possess the vision and talent to share their stories globally, and that art remains a powerful bridge between memory and homeland—regardless of distance.
