🇺🇬 Who Is Protecting Uganda’s Social Media Space?
Uganda’s online space is getting darker by the day, filled with nudity, prostitution adverts, fake news, and open insults that go unchecked. Every day, ordinary users are exposed to vulgar content and harassment, yet the institutions mandated to act appear silent.
The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), under the Uganda Communications Act of 2013, has the clear legal mandate to regulate electronic communication and content — including what’s shared on social media. Similarly, the Police’s Cyber Crime Division, operating under the Computer Misuse Act of 2011, is supposed to investigate and prosecute cases of online abuse, offensive communication, and exploitation.
But the question remains: Where are they?
As social media platforms flood with indecent exposure, impersonation, and open solicitation, the silence of both and the Uganda Police Cyber Crime Unit () is deafening. If the same energy used to track political speech or shutdown bloggers were applied to protecting citizens from online abuse and moral decay, Uganda’s digital space would be far safer.
Ugandans deserve a clean, respectful, and safe online environment, one that protects children, women, and ordinary users from exploitation and cyberbullying. The law is already clear. What’s missing is the will to enforce it.
🗣️ It’s time for , , , and to wake up and clean up Uganda’s social media space before it completely loses its moral compass.
