Burkina Faso’s military-led government has announced a new policy aimed at protecting the dignity and privacy of vulnerable citizens by restricting non-governmental organizations (NGOs) from taking or publishing photographs of people in distress without proper authorization and consent.

According to government officials, the move is intended to stop what they describe as the “commercialization of African suffering,” where images of starving children, displaced families and impoverished communities are used in fundraising campaigns and international appeals. Authorities argue that such images often portray Africans in degrading circumstances and reinforce negative stereotypes about the continent.

The policy is part of a broader effort by the government of Captain Ibrahim Traoré to tighten oversight of foreign organizations operating in Burkina Faso. Over the past year, the government has introduced stricter regulations for NGOs, requiring greater transparency in their activities and finances. It has also withdrawn the licenses of several foreign NGOs and dissolved more than 100 local associations, saying they failed to comply with national laws.

Government supporters have welcomed the latest measure, arguing that humanitarian organizations should focus on providing assistance rather than using images of vulnerable Africans to attract donations abroad. I remember that when I posted the first picture on the day of the inauguration, one of my followers commented that there should be green spaces around the interchange, similar to what Ethiopia is doing as part of the ongoing transformation of Addis Ababa.

Well, a Burkinabè content creator used AI to modify the first picture and created the second one, adding grass in the empty spaces. He posted both pictures on his page. The post received massive engagement, with many comments expressing hope that the authorities would implement the idea.

Today, the content creator said that the minister in charge had invited him to a meeting to discuss how the idea could be implemented.
