From 15,000 UGX to Aquaculture Professional: Christopher’s Journey 🐟 🌍

For many 22-year-olds in Kamuli, "work" used to mean strenuous construction labor, inconsistent pay, and a lack of workplace safety. Christopher Musambi was one of them, earning just 15,000 UGX a day in an environment where respect and professional growth were hard to find.

This , we are proud to spotlight how our project- WeWork-Green and decent jobs for youth is changing that narrative for youths in Busoga.
Through a work-based learning placement at Kamos Agro Fish Farm, Christopher traded manual labor for technical mastery. He didn’t just learn to farm; he learned to aquaculture the right way.
Today, he is skilled in:
• Precision Fish Grading: Optimizing yields by size-sorting.
• Infrastructure: Constructing and welding lake-based cages.
• Agribusiness: Implementing cement-lined systems to reduce stock loss.

Under the WeWork project, Christopher now works in an environment defined by mutual respect, clear task allocation, and safety.
"The future is bright," Christopher says. He’s no longer looking for a job; he’s looking to launch a collective aquaculture business with fellow youth.

The WeWork- Green and decent jobs for youth is funded by the , of Belgium in Uganda through . Implemented by , , and in Kamuli and Jinja districts.

Cultivating Local Entrepreneurship 💡

By integrating an incubation trajectory into the curriculum, TVET institutions transform students from jobseekers into job-creators.

The program involves TVET Tutors and Principals from Koboko, Yumbe, and Arua, who receive specialized Training of Trainers to implement this model.

This structure encourages ideation, prototyping, and pitching techniques, equipping youth with the mindset and tools to start and manage their own ventures.

Traditional education often provides theoretical knowledge. The strength of TVET, as demonstrated by this project incubation training, is its focus on practical, hands-on experience.

Students are not just learning theory; they are developing, testing, and pitching viable business ideas in high-potential sectors like horticulture, cassava, poultry, and maize.

This approach ensures that the skills being taught are directly relevant to the real community needs and economic opportunities available locally, directly countering the challenge of youth unemployment.

empowers young people to be job creators, not just job seekers. They learn to identify local problems and turn them into viable business solutions. We do this within value chains of cassava, horticulture and cereals which hold immense potential in the region

By teaching ideation, prototyping, and pitching, TVET students develop businesses that are deeply rooted in and directly benefit the local community.

🚀 Empowering Youth Agribusiness in Uganda!

Last week, we had the pleasure of being a part of an entrepreneurship and incubation training program in Arua, West Nile region of Uganda!

From October 28 to November 8, 2025, Cordaid, CINOP, and Rikolto rolled out this initiative as part of the Erasmus+ SASA VET Uganda project. The goal is simple but powerful: to strengthen vocational education's role in boosting youth entrepreneurship and local economic development.

During the training,
• TVEP Tutors and Principals from Koboko, Yumbe, and Arua engaged in a four-day Training of Trainers (ToT).
• The focus was on high-potential agribusiness sectors like horticulture, cassava, poultry, and maize.
• Participants got hands-on experience developing, testing, and pitching real-world business ideas.
• It all culminates in an "Opportunity Fair," where the best ideas are pitched to local stakeholders!

This program is about more than just skills—it’s about strengthening local ecosystems. We're connecting young entrepreneurs with mentors, microfinance institutions, and community leaders.
The most promising teams will receive mentorship and seed funding to grow their ideas into real businesses.
"We believe vocational education can empower young people to become changemakers in their local economies,” says Willem Kleinendorst, Project Lead at CINOP.
Stay tuned for updates on this inspiring journey!

What an impactful day in Kigali, Rwanda 🇷🇼!

The TREPA and PSAC projects, a joint effort by Cordaid, successfully co-hosted a B2B Meeting focused on a crucial theme: "Unlocking Impact Investment through Green Financing in Agricultural Value Chains for Resilient and Inclusive Growth."

We brought together a fantastic group of over 100 participants, including farmers’ associations, policymakers, regulators, NGOs, financial institutions, impact investors, and development partners. The energy was incredible, especially with strong government representation from key ministries like BNR, MINECOFIN, MINAGRI, and the Ministry of Environment, alongside vibrant participation from banks, MFIs, insurers, and SMEs.

Through dynamic remarks, insightful panel discussions, compelling exhibitions, and powerful testimonies, we showcased the tangible impact of Cordaid’s work through TREPA and PSAC.

This event truly solidified Cordaid's position as a leading catalyst for climate resilience and agribusiness transformation in Rwanda.

Let's keep the momentum going!

Celebrating Achievements, Capturing Lessons, and Paving the Way Forward

We had an incredible day on August 18, 2025!

We held the Closeout Workshop for the (B)eat The Locust Project (2022–2025) at Safari Park Hotel, Nairobi.

This groundbreaking initiative, funded by the Postcode Loterij (NPL) and implemented by Cordaid, ICIPE - International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecologyicipe, and IMPACT_KENYA, was heavily grounded on research.

It turned the 2019/2020 desert locust crisis into an opportunity for resilience and innovation in the ASAL counties of Marsabit, Isiolo, Samburu, and Laikipia.
The workshop was special because it brought together government representatives, development partners, private sector actors, and—most importantly—the community members who are at the heart of this transformation. Their stories of resilience and innovation reminded us why this work matters.

Look at what we achieved together!
• 38 community groups trained and engaged in cricket rearing with 1,800+ members (majority (86%) women and 39% youth).
• 684 cricket rearing kits, 3,500 chicks, and 15,800 kgs of chicken feed distributed.
• 4 Training and Aggregation Centres established across the counties.
• 3 million+ community members sensitized on safe locust management, cricket rearing, and biopesticides.
• A profound shift in mindsets, with communities embracing insects as food, income, and climate-smart solutions.
• Suction technology and County-level preparedness plans developed for desert locust management and control.
• 3 biopesticide isolates developed by icipe, ready for uptake by commercial producers.
• Significant policy strides towards a national biopesticide framework.

We are so grateful to for the generous support, to our consortium partners, and to the incredible communities whose leadership has been the true engine of change
