Child's i Foundation Keeping children in safe, loving families, by addressing the root causes of separation, through community-led solutions. Nearly all have family.

In Uganda, more than 50,000 children are growing up in orphanages. Orphanages make orphans out of children. Every day, families are forced to give up children in the promise of a better life. They lose their childhoods and their life chances. Child’s i Foundation helps children return to families by rebuilding family support systems. We work with partners to create foster care networks that keep children out of orphanages. We help repurpose orphanages into services that meet local needs: preventing family separation, reuniting families or placing children with safe adoptive parents. We work with the Government to build a national social workforce across Uganda, and help a nation reimagine the care of its most vulnerable citizens. Families don’t need to be separated because they are struggling. They need us to stand with them. Editor is a single mother of three in Kampala. Financial pressure had pushed her family close to breaking point, not because she lacked the determination to care for her children, but because she lacked the resources to keep going.

Through Child’s i Foundation’s family-strengthening work, Editor received practical economic support alongside regular support from a social worker and community volunteer. She expanded her small business, increased her income and strengthened her ability to care for her children. Child's i Foundation. Today, she has a simple ambition: to provide for her children without outside help.

That is what is about.

It is about reaching families before crisis becomes separation. It is about strengthening parents and communities so that children can grow up safe, loved and supported within families. And it is a reminder that relatively small, timely investments in families can change the direction of a child’s life.

For Noeline, caring for 10 children meant finding every possible way to make a living.

She kept chickens, sold soft drinks and took on tailoring. But she knew she needed more confidence and business skills to turn these small ventures into something more sustainable.

Through Street Business School training, Noeline learned how to market her businesses, reach new customers and step outside her comfort zone.

She put those lessons into practice.

Her soft drinks kiosk grew. Her chicken and egg business expanded. And her confidence grew with them.

“I can never think of giving up again.”

This is what family strengthening can look like: giving caregivers the tools and opportunities to build stronger, more resilient families.

Because when caregivers have the means to provide, children have a stronger chance to grow up where they belong, with family.

"Scale doesn’t happen by working alone.

It happens when we find what works, learn together, build the evidence, and create partnerships that can take proven approaches further.

At Child’s i Foundation, that is central to how we think about scale: developing and testing practical solutions that strengthen families and help prevent children from being unnecessarily separated from those who care for them — and then working with others to adapt and grow what works.

Our partnership with Nyaka is a great example.

Together, we have been adapting Nyaka’s long-established Grandmothers Programme, bringing together economic strengthening, savings, parenting support and community networks as part of a family-strengthening approach.

And the evidence is growing.

Across Mpigi and Rubanda, the programme is now working with 601 grandmothers, supporting 5,595 children. Among a group of 95 grandmothers being tracked, savings participation increased from 42% to 98%, while overall participation in savings reached 97.8% in 2025.

It was wonderful to see the Kanyike Grandmothers Group recently welcoming visitors from Women’s Empowerment International, which has supported Nyaka for more than 15 years. The grandmothers shared how savings, mutual support and enterprises such as liquid soap making are strengthening livelihoods and building resilience within their families and communities.

For us, this is what meaningful scale looks like: test and learn, build the evidence, share what works, and work with others to take it further.

Because keeping more children safely in families will always require all of us.

Some days, Peace fed her children once. Maybe twice. She was doing everything she could.

Up before dawn in Kanyanya, frying cassava and mandazi, then selling throughout the day. With her children’s father often away for work, much of the responsibility for providing for the family fell on her shoulders.

But there is only so far a small daily profit can stretch.

This is what the risk of family separation often looks like before it happens.

Not a mother who has stopped loving her children. Not a parent who doesn’t care.

A family running out of options.

Peace didn’t need someone to take her children away. She needed the opportunity to earn enough to keep them safe, fed and together.

With nutrition training and business skills support, Peace diversified her small business into selling charcoal and vegetables. Her income grew several times over.

Today, she is saving. She is planning. And she talks about her children’s future as something she has the power to shape.

“I can never think of giving up again.”

This is why preventing family separation has to begin long before a child reaches the door of an institution.

It means listening to families. Understanding what is pushing them towards crisis. And investing in practical support that strengthens their ability to care for their own children. Poverty should never be the reason a child loses their family.

Charity can look like love. 🧡

For Ruth, it meant opening her heart and her home to Joy, choosing to become her family and to stand by her, even when the journey became difficult.
Because sometimes, the greatest gift we can give a child isn’t something money can buy. It is love, care, safety and belonging, a family to call home.

“Belonging Begins in Family: Strengthening Families, Transforming Communities.”

Every child deserves a family to belong to. Yet for too many children in Uganda, that belonging is still out of reach.
