Child's i Foundation Keeping children in safe, loving families, by addressing the root causes of separation, through community-led solutions. Nearly all have family.

In Uganda, more than 50,000 children are growing up in orphanages. Orphanages make orphans out of children. Every day, families are forced to give up children in the promise of a better life. They lose their childhoods and their life chances. Child’s i Foundation helps children return to families by rebuilding family support systems. We work with partners to create foster care networks that keep c

hildren out of orphanages. We help repurpose orphanages into services that meet local needs: preventing family separation, reuniting families or placing children with safe adoptive parents. We work with the Government to build a national social workforce across Uganda, and help a nation reimagine the care of its most vulnerable citizens. At Child’s i Foundation we make families, not orphans.

How does strengthening community agency keep children safe?

Over three years, with support from MartinJames Foundation we have worked together to strengthen family care systems in Uganda. The results matter: 117 foster households established, 73 children supported through foster care, 25 children reintegrated with their families, and 49 government officials trained.
But perhaps the most important result was this: fewer children needed foster care than expected.

Why? Because stronger community gatekeeping and earlier support helped families stay together and prevented unnecessary separation. That is systems change, not simply creating better alternatives for children after separation, but strengthening families, communities and government systems so fewer children need alternative care in the first place.

Since 2009, Child's i Foundation has championed a simple belief: children grow up best in families. This report shows what becomes possible when communities have the agency and support to make that a reality.

For years, the grandmothers of Muyira Parish carried one of the heaviest responsibilities in their community largely alone, raising grandchildren with nowhere else to go, often in isolation, with little income and no access to financial services.

Recognising their vital role in protecting children, Child's i Foundation began working alongside them. That partnership became the Muyira Grandmother Group.

Over three years, the intervention started with knowledge: training in financial literacy, business management, and how to run a Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA), plus a revolving fund to launch income generating activities.

The grandmothers moved fast. As a collective, they started a cake making business. Individually, they took up agriculture, livestock, and household goods production. Through group saving and internal lending, members could grow their businesses, handle emergencies, and pay school fees, all without outside creditors or aid.

Today, the group's enterprises cover their own administrative costs, replenish their revolving fund, and fund child protection activities; self-sustained, not externally funded.

Just as powerful is what has changed for the grandmothers themselves. They now manage their own finances, make strategic business decisions, and plan for the future with a confidence that simply wasn't possible before.

This is proof that when communities are given the right skills, resources, and opportunities, they don't just recover; they become the drivers of their own lasting change. Sustainable child protection can be built from within.

Through our relaunched campaign , we're raising £50,000 over the next few weeks to stand alongside more families before crisis strikes, so more children can remain where they belong: in a family.

On 3 July, our CEO David Adoke took Amanda Isimbi Kabale, the Communications Manager from Canalbox Uganda into the community to see our shared impact first-hand, and to look beyond the metrics at the real “hidden maths” of transformation. Canalbox Uganda is not simply an internet provider. They are committed to helping ensure that digital access takes communities that important step further, connecting people not only to technology, but also to knowledge, opportunity and stronger futures.

Together, we met Joweria, a remarkable foster mother who did not wait for wealth before choosing to change lives. With love, determination and support through community training, she has helped severely malnourished children recover, regain their strength and receive a second chance at life. In Kanyanya, we also met graduates of Street Business School, who showed us how one practical business skill can begin to break cycles of poverty. They are not simply saving small amounts; they are building businesses, strengthening households and contributing to local economies.

This is what partnership makes possible. It is not just what we do, it is what we can achieve together. Canalbox Uganda’s support is helping fuel more than a temporary intervention. It is contributing to a sustainable chain reaction in which digital access, knowledge, family care and economic opportunity reinforce one another.

There’s a common assumption: close an orphanage, and children lose their care.
That’s not what happens. What disappears is the idea that children need to be separated from their families to be safe. In its place come better forms of care: trained foster carers, community volunteers who support families before crisis becomes separation, local social workers who know children by name rather than by case number, and real homes replacing institutions.
At Child’s i, we have worked with communities and local government to repurpose five orphanages in Uganda. In Mpigi, one institution that once housed 65 children has now been transformed: those children are living in families, and the former institution has been repurposed to support more than 400 households in the wider community. That is what care reform looks like. It is not about closing doors. It is about opening better ones, doors that lead children back to family, not away from it.

If we are serious about children’s wellbeing, we must move beyond preserving buildings and invest in what helps children truly thrive: safe families, strong communities, and systems that keep them together.
