THE PRESIDENT OF THE LIBERIAN COMMUNITY IN UGANDA, MR. BROWN, CALLS FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF LIBERIA EMBASSY OR CONSULATE IN EAST AFRICA
The President of the Liberian Community in Uganda, Mr. Emmanuel Brown, has called on the Liberian Government to establish an Embassy or Consulate in East Africa.
The appeal was made during a visit by an assessment team from Rwanda to Uganda ahead of the Federation of Liberian Communities in East Africa General Summit, which Mr. Brown is the host.
He emphasized that having a Liberian diplomatic mission in East Africa would address pressing issues faced by Liberians residing in the region, such as Visa renewals and document processing.
Mr. Brown who is a renowned Businessman told the delegation that there is no Liberian Embassy or Consulate in Uganda or the broader East Africa region adding the closest Liberian Embassy is located in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, approximately 1,185 kilometers away from Kampala, Uganda.
The lack of local diplomatic representation causes difficulties for Liberians in East Africa, including delays and complications in obtaining visas, renewing travel documents, and accessing consular services.
Embassies and consulates are crucial as they provide necessary governmental services to nationals abroad, including visa issuance, passport renewals, legal and emergency assistance, and support in cases of detention or discrimination.
The presence of a local embassy or consulate would facilitate more efficient handling of needs, enhance bilateral relations, and strengthen support networks for Liberians living far from home.
Mr. Brown’s call underlines the urgent need for Liberia to expand its diplomatic footprint in East Africa to better serve its diaspora and streamline administrative processes that are currently hampered by the absence of nearby Liberian diplomatic missions.
