Today, on the , we celebrate the resilience, leadership, and achievements of women transforming Uganda’s mining sector. This year’s theme, “A Year of Collective Action and Impact,” reflects the power of collaboration in creating opportunities for women miners.

During our engagement with women miners in Busia and Namayingo today, we heard inspiring stories of progress since our last interaction. Women have formed and registered cooperatives, established SACCOs, opened bank accounts, and grown businesses that are improving livelihoods and strengthening their communities.

Despite these gains, the women miners called for expanded electricity connections to mining areas, lower power tariffs, access to solar solutions, and targeted programmes that support their participation and growth in the sector.

At GRA, we remain committed to amplifying the voices of women miners and advocating for solutions that enable them to thrive.

: We recognise and celebrate Patrick Okwairwot, the new LCI Chairperson for Rwengabi Village in Kabwoya-Kikuube, whose community monitoring work has touched three consequential areas:

1. Collaborative Forest Management
2. Kingfisher oil field compensation
3. Rwengabi community land rights.

Communities living alongside resource extraction deserve transparent processes, fair outcomes, and sustained civic engagement and he has worked toward all three.

In commemoration of , we partnered with Sir Tito Winyi Primary School and the Kikuube community to turn climate action into community action.

Together, we conducted a sanitation caravan, environmental awareness sessions, tree planting activities, and youth-led advocacy where the young people were empowered to see themselves not just as beneficiaries of climate action, but as leaders shaping a more sustainable future.

More than 20 fruit tree species were planted, helping to restore green spaces while creating long-term environmental and livelihood benefits for the school and surrounding community.

We believe starts with communities and that by equipping young people with knowledge and a sense of responsibility for their environment, we are helping build resilient communities capable of protecting natural resources for generations to come.
