We are pleased to have our Head of Finance and Operations, Ms Marrion Apio, participating in the 2026 AFREIKH Summer School on Managing Africa’s Extractive Future in the Energy Transition, hosted by the Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP).

The first two days have explored the governance of oil and mining lifecycles, Africa’s green mineral potential and the deliberate action required to turn the continent’s resource wealth into inclusive and sustainable development.

Discussions highlighted critical governance challenges, including opacity in contract negotiations, weak monitoring, limited community participation, undisclosed beneficial ownership, local content compliance gaps, cost inflation and restricted access to extractive sector data.

The sessions further emphasised that Africa must move beyond supplying raw minerals to global markets. By investing in mineral processing, manufacturing, technology, financing, technical capabilities and regional value chains, African countries can retain more value, create decent jobs and strengthen industrial competitiveness.

For us, this engagement strengthens our commitment to advancing transparency, accountability, environmental responsibility and citizen-centred governance within Uganda’s extractive sector. The insights gained will contribute to our work promoting policies and practices that ensure natural resource wealth supports inclusive development and delivers meaningful benefits for communities.

For the past decade, we have worked closely with Busara to strengthen citizen agency and explore how behavioural science can support more responsive, community-led development.

This week in Nairobi, we joined them for the Active Citizens Forum, marking 10 years of learning and experimentation, and the launch of Busara’s Behavioral Science for Governance (BeGov) Lab.

The two-day forum brought together civil society, government, academia, student bodies, local communities and development partners from across East Africa to reflect on how behavioural science can strengthen citizen participation and improve governance.

At the forum, we shared our experience applying behavioural science to strengthen our Community Based Models (CBMs), equipping communities with the skills, knowledge and confidence to participate meaningfully in development processes.

Discussions around the launch of the BeGov Lab also highlighted the importance of stronger collaboration between behavioural science practitioners, civil society and government to influence mindsets, strengthen policy implementation and contribute to sustainable development.

Under our project on 'Strengthening Women’s land rights and climate resilience' in the Albertine Region, we conducted district-level trainings in Buliisa, Masindi and Hoima to equip women’s groups with practical financial literacy and group management skills.

We reflect on the experiences shared during the trainings and the role financial literacy can play in building stronger, more accountable and sustainable women’s groups.

Indigenous women hold generations of ecological knowledge, yet remain underrepresented in land and resource decisions.

As we reflect on the 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘋𝘢𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥’𝘴 𝘐𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘗𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘴, our latest article examines why secure land tenure, Indigenous women’s leadership and biodiversity conservation must be addressed together.

Through our project, 𝙎𝙩𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙜𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙄𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙜𝙚𝙣𝙤𝙪𝙨 𝙒𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙣’𝙨 𝙇𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙥 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙏𝙚𝙣𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙎𝙚𝙘𝙪𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝘽𝙞𝙤𝙙𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙞𝙣 𝙐𝙜𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙖, we will work with Indigenous communities in Uganda to strengthen women’s participation in land governance and support community-led, culturally respectful conservation approaches.

Yesterday, we held a Women’s Safe Space Dialogue on Land Rights in Masindi district, creating a space for women and girls affected by oil development to strengthen their understanding of the rights and legal protections available to them.

Through the training, over 60 women gained practical knowledge of land rights, land tenure systems and compensation frameworks related to oil development. More importantly, they strengthened their ability to identify and document land rights violations, seek redress and participate more confidently in decisions affecting their land and livelihoods.

Over the next few days, we shall continue to equip grassroots women with the knowledge and confidence to protect their rights, speak up when those rights are threatened and demand fair treatment in processes that directly affect their lives.

For many women in 𝗨𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮’𝘀 𝗔𝗹𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻, land is the foundation of their livelihoods, food security and families’ wellbeing. Yet, despite women making up much of the agricultural workforce, many do not legally own the land they cultivate and are often excluded from decisions concerning land acquisition and compensation.

Today, we held a Women’s Safe Space Dialogue on , bringing together women from communities affected by oil development in 𝘽𝙪𝙡𝙞𝙞𝙨𝙖 𝘿𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙘𝙩.

The training equipped participants with practical knowledge of their land rights, systems and compensation frameworks related to oil development. They also learned how to identify and document land rights violations, seek redress and participate more confidently in decisions affecting their land and livelihoods.

By making complex land laws and compensation processes easier to understand, we are supporting women build the knowledge and confidence to speak up, protect their and demand fair treatment as oil development continues across the region.

As Uganda implements the Protection of Sovereignty Act, 2026, we have convened NGOs, Community-Based Organizations, and Community-Based Monitors from the Albertine Region to unpack the law, strengthen understanding of legal obligations, promote compliance, and facilitate dialogue on its implications for civic space and community development.

This builds on our earlier engagement during the Bill's development, where we gathered citizens' views and submitted recommendations to Parliament.
