Grateful for an Eye-Opening Fundraising Experience!

Today, I had the privilege of attending a powerful For Impact | The Suddes Group fundraising training facilitated by Nick and Lisa. Their insights could not have come at a better time as we embark on a fundraising campaign at Talents Enabling Uganda (TEU) to establish our new Skilling and Business Development Centre in Gayaza.

One lesson that truly stood out was understanding that Sales is the forging of human relationships and importance of operating at the 10,000-meter altitude leading conversations with mission, vision, and impact, rather than getting stuck in the day-to-day activities. This shift in perspective gave me clarity, confidence, and a renewed sense of purpose in how we engage partners and mobilize support.

I’m excited to apply these principles as we continue empowering youth, women, and communities through skills, entrepreneurship, and mindset transformation.

A heartfelt thank you to the For Impact | The Suddes Group team for the inspiration and practical tools.

Empowering Businesses for Growth and Impact.
I’m thrilled to share that we’ve officially been introduced to the SMEs we will be mentoring in Financial Management, under the SHONA Herizon Project; an incredible project that champions the growth of promising businesses across East Africa.
Over the next three months, we will be walking alongside these entrepreneurs, helping them to:
1. Build efficient financial systems that drive clarity and better decision-making
2. Strengthen financial discipline for sustainability and growth
3. Translate financial data into actionable insights that unlock their business potential
Working hands-on with entrepreneurs at this stage is always deeply fulfilling. Each session is a step toward transforming mindsets, enhancing accountability, and positioning SMEs to attract investment and scale sustainably.
We are TEU are proud to be part of SHONA mission to build good businesses in East Africa, and we echo the vision of creating an ecosystem where entrepreneurs are not just surviving, but thriving with purpose and structure.
We believe that together, we can nurture businesses that create jobs, drive innovation, and shape Africa’s economic transformation.

SME Owners; Have You Talked to Your Tax ,( URA) CRM Lately?

Yesterday, I spent over an hour with my Clients Relationship Manager (CRM) at URA. It was an eye-opening conversation about my account(TIN). Friends, forget about those days, when we had to run away from URA officers or give them a deaf ear, these days, the closer you are to them the better for your business if you want to operate at peace especially if you want to scale.

Here’s what I learned and what I think every SME owner with a TIN needs to do before the end of August (August is a month after which they will begin raising assessments based on review of returns you made previously. If you didn't file, then you get penalties for not loving your country😁 week enough to develop it.

1 - Even when you have filed your returns, URA still reviews and investigates them.
2 - If they see abnormalities (and trust me, they often do), they will dig deeper.
3 - Most of these abnormalities happen because SMEs either file in a hurry but most of the time, they delegate it to someone who just fills the returns for the sake of meeting the deadline. Someone was shocked at the figures they saw in their account.
4 - Every single figure in your return must be defendable otherwise, you risk penalties, audits, or other complications.

Action Point for you my dear SME. Walk into URA near you, ask for your CRM, and request an update on your account status. It could save you from unexpected headaches later.

Remember, Tax Compliance is not just about filing, it’s about filing right. Ensuring that the figures filed can be defendable. I mean, you can explain the figures. so basically record well, know your figures, operate well and enjoy success. God bless you

Never Delegate Your Hands or Eyes in Your Main Hustle

One of the fastest ways an SME can lose direction, customers, and even profit is by over-delegating.
Yes, you should empower your team, but your hands and eyes must remain on the pulse of your business.

When you hand over your main hustle entirely to others, you risk losing:

- The personal touch your customers value.
- Timely awareness of opportunities or problems.
- Control over the quality and direction of your brand.

If you must be away, put in place a clear reporting and accountability system daily sales updates, weekly financial summaries, or even photo/video proof of critical operations.

Your business is like your child, it thrives best when you remain actively involved, even from a distance.

Don’t just own it. See it. Touch it. Guide it.

Demystifying Financial Recording, Financial Statements, and Financial Reports for SMEs

Many business owners sadly leave everything related to finance to the accountant and have completely ignored their role of knowing their business, some have paid a high price. Records manipulated. Taxes misfiled. Opportunities missed. All because they didn’t know what they didn’t know. Remember, if you don't know your numbers, you don't know your business.

But here’s the truth:

Financial recording is simply keeping track of every coin coming in and going out. It’s your daily logbook, receipts, sales, expenses, petty cash, and bank statements.

Financial statements are just summaries of your records.

- The Income Statement or profit and loss or statement of comprehensive income, shows if you’re making a profit or loss.
- The Balance Sheet or statement of financial position l, shows what you own and what you owe.
- The Cash Flow Statement shows whether you can pay your bills.

Financial reports turn those statements into insights. They answer key questions:

- Are we growing?
- Are we overspending?
- Can we afford to expand?

When SMEs embrace simple, structured financial systems, be it Excel, QuickBooks, or another tool, they move from guesswork to growth.

- You make smarter decisions
- You gain investor and lender confidence
- You track progress with clarity

If you’re an SME founder, don’t wait. Start recording, understand your numbers, and let your data guide your next bold move.

At Talents Enabling Uganda, we simplify this journey, training and walking with SMEs to build confidence in their finances. You don’t have to be an accountant to run a financially smart business! Our passion is for every business to know finance

When they discover their Entrepreneurial Spirit, they change the world.

Every great business, movement, or innovation started when someone dared to think differently, take initiative, and act.

That’s the power of entrepreneurship, not just in building profit, but in solving problems, creating jobs, restoring dignity, and transforming communities.

When young people are equipped with the right mindset, skills, and support, their potential is unstoppable. They become creators, not just consumers. Builders, not just dreamers. Thanks Smile Again for make it possible for us to work with these awesome ladies.

Let’s invest in that spirit.
Let’s nurture it in our schools, churches, communities, and workplaces.
Because when they discover it, the world doesn’t stay the same.

After the impactful Business Accounting and Finance (BAF) training we carried out in partnership with Edify Uganda where we reached over 390 schools in school, its encouraging to see continued progress at the school level.

Today, our ED had a productive follow-up conversation with the Director of Kabumbi Community Junior School where they reviewed and prepared documentation to use to organise the past three years’ financials(Profit and Loss, Balance sheet and Cashflow statement) in preparation for filing tax returns and worked on streamlining the school’s accounting processes.

As part of the support, we’re installing QuickBooks, customizing it to their context, and training the bursar to ensure accurate, timely, and transparent financial management.

Grateful for the collaboration. Thanks, John, for your openness and commitment to building stronger systems for sustainability and growth.

I had the pleasure of visiting Detra Energy, an innovative SME providing clean cooking and biogas solutions in Uganda, as part of our ongoing BDS engagement under the SNV-BLU ABC Project.

Our support focuses on helping Detra Energy develop a robust business and strategic plan, a critical step in unlocking Results-Based Financing (RBF) and scaling their life-changing solutions to more households and institutions across Uganda.

This is more than paperwork; it's about aligning vision with actionable goals, refining business models, and preparing enterprises to attract investment and deliver measurable impact.

SMEs need to be grounded, be high-impact, when we equip purpose-driven SMEs with the right tools, mentorship, and strategy, we fuel sustainable transformation.

Let’s keep bridging the gap between innovation and investment readiness.

Sometimes, All It Takes Is a Question.

Yesterday, under the Advance Leadership Initiative, we hosted an open Q&A session for the SMEs we’re mentoring and what a powerful experience it was!

No PowerPoints. No lectures. Just raw, honest questions from entrepreneurs about the real struggles they face; from pricing, hiring, cash flow, customer retention, partnerships, policy, compliance and practical, experience based answers from us.

We discovered something important:
Many SMEs carry questions they fear to ask, afraid of sounding inexperienced, unsure, or vulnerable. Yet asking could unlock clarity, direction, and growth.

This session was more than answers. It was social learning in action, peer-to-peer sharing, reassurance, and breakthroughs. Sometimes, the best support we can offer SMEs is a safe space to ask the questions that truly matter.

To all BDS providers and entrepreneur support organizations: Let’s create more spaces like this.
To every entrepreneur: Your questions are valid. Ask them.

Excited to provide to Biogas Entrepreneurs(BE) in Uganda!

I’m thrilled to share that we’ve got an anchor deal to strengthen the capacity of Biogas Entrepreneurs(BE) across Uganda —Creating the Impact that matters by preparing them to become investment ready and financially resilient in the face of today’s sustainability and energy challenges.

This ABC Project is Implemented by partners SNV and BSUL. Through this assignment, we will:

1. Build Technical & Business Capacity and
Equip Biogas Entrepreneurs with the tools and knowledge to run efficient, impactful, and investable businesses.

2. Prepare BE's for Advanced Results-Based Financing (RBF). Support enterprises in structuring their operations, documentation, and systems to meet RBF criteria and receive catalytic capital.

3. Unlock Blended Financing Pathways.
Go beyond grant-based support and help entrepreneurs access a mix of equity, debt, and guarantees—opening doors to long-term sustainable financing.

4. Nurture Resilient, Growth-Oriented Partnerships. When BEs are well-prepared and aligned, they grow beyond funding—they build legacy.

Our prayer is and wish is to look beyond the assignment. Build the future of our great BEs because the future of Uganda’s energy economy is green, local, and entrepreneur-led.

Bookkeeping may seem like a straightforward task every CEO should master, given its crucial role in business. However, many business owners often overlook its importance, delegating it to junior staff who, without proper guidance, may not follow best practices. As a result, these owners miss out on vital insights that drive informed decision-making.

If you're looking to streamline your financial systems and build a solid foundation for strategic growth, let's connect! I specialize in training and mentoring business leaders to take control of their financial health and make data-driven decisions for long-term success.
