Why the Hustler too needs a voice - Our Story

The Workshop Uganda was founded on June 28, 2017, to promote local entrepreneurship especially among the youth in Uganda’s informal sector. We do this through business promotion, annual regional exhibitions and expositions and almost free business consultancy services.

According to records from the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS), the informal sector — obviously ignored – employs about 80 per cent of Uganda’s youth and contributes a whopping 50 per cent to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Despite the above figures, the sector players – mostly youth who can’t find jobs – don’t enjoy social benefits because their businesses are not registered – thanks to a long bureaucratic system of company registration/formalization. This has ensured that businesses in the informal sector remain vulnerable, highly mobile and insecure.

The challenges notwithstanding, stories of powerful innovations, out-of-this world products and services continue to emerge from the sector but are never in the mainstream media which prefers corporate, educated, middle class white-collar proletariats that can buy and read the newspapers or watch television – leaving the dirty-handed, yet equally hardworking and sometimes better earning youth out in the fringes.
