The increased rollback of rights across Africa and the world is a beating drum for the need for increased, sustained and values-based collaboration across movements, activists, community organizers, educators, frontline activists etc. Our struggles are interconnected and so is our freedom.

This is the time for greater solidarity across disciplines, fields of study and areas of practice. We all need to be in solidarity, and work, with one another meaningfully.

The problem is not that people don’t report sexual assault. It’s what happens when they do. For many victim-survivors, the harm does not end with the violence itself. It continues in the systems they are told will help them: systems that demand disclosure, then punish trauma; systems that ask for evidence while eroding privacy and credibility in the process. Years of scrutiny, delay, exposure and re-traumatisation in exchange for what? The mere possibility of ‘justice’. We keep telling victim-survivors to come forward, while refusing to confront what they come forward into. But victim-survivors already know. They know before they ever walk into a police station.

Climate justice addresses the unequal impact of climate change and environmental degradation on those who often contribute least to it (the degradation). In many areas, women and girls have to go very far away from their homes and communities in search of food and water due to scarcity and famine caused by environmental degradation. This keeps them away from their homes, schools, families, communities and livelihoods, and it increases their risk of facing violence.

A just and violence-free world for all, includes a climate-just world for everyone.
